What is ''Real Star Trek''?

Which they have, in fact, done.

If they actually had done then then I could suspend my disbelief. But the fact that it is so visually inconsistent with what narrative comes ten years later ruins illusion.

"Real" Star Trek is whatever one wants it to be. There is no correct answer.

I'm sorry, but the correct answer is what ever I want it to be.

And DSC is good, and still retains those elements.

Maybe I'm just old and jaded? Discovery has yet to hook me in any appreciable way. It isn't that it is terrible or anything, it just doesn't make me want to come back for more. It is more of a "I'll get to it when I get to it".

Star Trek is everything with er... Star Trek on it but The Orville is better Star Trek than Discovery

Notice which series has the most stories posted? That's right. VOYAGER - the series that you blame for "killing" the franchise. These are not individual chapters; they're stories, some of which run over 100 chapters and explore the characters and alternate takes on some of the episodes. Quite a few are alternate takes on "Endgame", and there are certainly a wide variety of views on what happens after the ship returns to Earth... if it does return to Earth at that time. Some stories have Janeway ignore the Admiral's nagging and avoid engaging with the Borg, so the journey takes much longer.
Maybe the reason there are so many Voyager stories is that the authors are trying to fix what was messed up and there are fewer stories based on the other shows because they got it right the first time. Just a possible theory.

Granted, a lot of the stories have the premise of "I hated Endgame, so this is MY version of how the series ended."

But most of the stories are of the sort that explore the relationships characters had in the series, or they're more adventures for the crew. The best are a combination of the two.

I wouldn't say that a series that doesn't inspire me at all is one that "got it right the first time." It's pretty bad when I haven't seen over half the episodes in a series and I don't even care. I stopped collecting TNG and DS9 novels over a decade ago. I've just been going through my print fanzine collection and discovered that I have very few TNG 'zines... and no desire to bother with the ones I missed. I'm still collecting the TOS ones, though.

I must admit to not reading these stories but I'm not surprised Voyager is the most popular because it is inspirational. It is also the most re-watched and when you see the number or messages on the Voyager forum compared to others she does have appeal.

It's not Voyager's fault Discovery is crap. It's not TNG's fault or DS9's fault etc. Not even the Orville's fault. Previous Trek was followed by other Trek. None of them ruined anything, in fact TNG, DS9 and Voyager went for seven season of 26 episode shows. That is success in anyone's reckoning and until Discovery can come even close to that it hasn't earned anything more than having the Trek name slapped on its label.

If you're interested you should check out Voyager virtual season 8 (http://vv8.jetc.org/vvs8/archive2.html) It's been a while since i read it and I remember not liking it very much. YMMV, though.
