I don't see how any of this can be labeled as depressing, since it is realtively tame compared to almost every other TV show at this moment

I mean, yeah, I get it. If the only other TV show one has watched was My Little Ponies: Friendship Is Magic, then yeah, I guess compared to that, DISCO is depressing
Then stop watching. I don't understand why you watch something that you find depressing.
then watch any other quality show atm, get REALLY depressed and come back to the DISCO to cheer you up.
Let me know when it is standing on its own...

Broadly, this is something I don't get. DISCO gets panned for doing things that other Star Trek's have done.
By the same people that praise The Oralville when it does things they've panned other Trek's for doing.
Orville manages to do it without the self-aggrandizing.
Yeah... like the cycle of the seasons somethings just dont change. People complained about The Next Generation when it first came out, people complained about Voyager when it first came out, people complained about Deep Space 9 when it first came out, and people complained about Enterprise when it first came out.
You are mad at a show for 'abandoning' something it never fully embraced in the first place. Sure the qualities you listed are found throughout various bits of Star Trek and they do make up some of the greatest episodes in Trek cinema. But they are not exclusively what makes up Trek. We have seen time and time again the embrace of some sort of fantastical element that was void of explanation. I mean, literally look at Q.
I love introspectice, metaphorical science fiction more than anything - but I also know that Star Trek is much more than that. It's fine to have a preference of what kind of Star Trek episodes you prefer, but dont pretend like thats the one and only way Star Trek has been done.
I look forward to 15-20 years down the road when people look back at all the complaints and laugh at how things never change in relation to whatever new Star Trek show they have at the time. Star Trek fans just like complaining, I suppose.

I'm just surprised that CBS could expend so much time and money to make such a thoroughly unimpressive television series without "NCIS" in the title.
I'll agree up to "NCIS: New Orleans." That town has a special place in my heart. And my liver.

I know I just posted that DISCO should be watched and judged as stand alone, but I'll now violate my own rule and say that the fact that TOS shows such an optimism it gives me a sense that DISCO endures something so difficult to produce that optimism.
I think it does fine on its own, minus my own caveat above. However, even without "Star Trek" in the title, I would enjoy Discovery.

Yes, Discovery is portraying the suffering that led to the optimism and values that we see in later series. It astounds me that people don't see that and just want cookie cutter, straight out of the packaging, perfect humans running around.
Bye guys. Initially sceptical but loving Discovery and headed over to talk to a lot of other people liking it too.

Orville isn't star trek, doesn't have star trek baggage or history or expectations. Orville is a MASH style show where talented people are balanced by silly ineptitude with a heroic moment at thend.
It isnt star trek and not really comparable.
Orville is a cute, quirky little sci-fi show that is entirely derivative.
It's not bad, I've watched every episode...but I feel NOTHING for it. Like, no passion or excitement or emotion at all. It just doesn't matter because, like you said, it's not Star Trek.
If VOY is criticized for being "TNG Lite," I'd say Orville compounds that by being "VOY Lite." That's not a sin...because it is interesting to watch, but it could vanish tomorrow and I wouldn't even bat an eyelash.
And are you saying Discovery is Star Trek, and has the baggage and history?
So far, this is a whole new sci fi show. A total mixture of Sliders and Dr. Who. I believe that it should have been set in the 25th century not a decade before TOS.
We need the temporal time line police from the 26th century to fix this whole Discovery series and wipe it out of existence. Then a good neuralizer to completely wipe this show out of my memory.
