Spoilers Visual continuity - Does Discovery strictly need to show past designs... at all?

Still not a big fan of the Klingon makeup, which seems to be an aberration from the norm. Anyone who thinks it is a cheaply-made series isn't paying attention, or doesn't want to.

I was unsure on the Klingons, but grew to really like it. Very alien and more inline with the lore than what we saw most times. But yeah, you can dislike it, but you can't honestly claim its cheaply made.

Plus it was logical to do the Klingons this way so they could disguise Shazad Latif under all that makeup.

True, I think they went back to the TMP ideas on how they evolved. They also designed skulls and such as well and you can tell it was fanbois as it has a bit of thought. Why they went bald, I have no idea though.

Yeah the Klingons redesign never bothered me at all. T'Kuvma was probably the most drastic as he has a more beetle like appearence but other than that it makes sense. It makes them look more alien to me. I'm not sure why they all have to be bald though. It's like Vulcan's all having the Spock haircut. We need some hair diversity.

If I am right, Fuller took his ideas from TMP concepts, in which they descended from crustacean like critters. And why must all races have hair? Its kinda nice to have a non-lizard bald race really. Not sure I would have done it with Klingons myself, but its a neat idea.

Just a thought: L'rell is in prison. She's been in prison for days. Zero head stubble.

So, I guess they cannot grow hair.

More in line with the lore? Well most Klingons we saw were during the runs of TNG, DS9, Voyager and ENT. And they all were of the same phenotype, except those few infected with the Augment virus in ENT. So, for almost twenty years of continous production, there really was no difference in their appearance. What would be considered as lore and "most times"? Four series with more than 700 Episodes and at least four Movies? Or two series with less than 100 episodes together?

If there's one defining characteristic of the Klingon look, it's the hair and beard. Even in universe, Klingons are famous for their great hair.

really? because I very strongly believe that most people's (who know who Klingons are) first association with Klingons would be the ridges. I really consider the head ridges the 'one dfining characterist' of their look

Most aliens have bumpy foreheads, and many have ridges. Not all Klingons have ridges, but they all have beards(with the exception of women and children) and post TOS, pretty hair.

Mr. Mott says: "Oh no, just a little off the top. I took way too much off last time. I was just telling my colleague, Mister Setti, how thick and luxuriant Klingon hair is. It's such a pleasure to cut. Sometimes I get carried away. All those away missions, the wind and dry air, the elements really are harsh on the hair. I'd like to suggest that you start using a conditioning agent."

Great hair guys...........who is up for a beard growing contest?

Maybe that's their version of a playoff beard: the conquest shave. :D They only start growing a beard after the successful occpation of a planet. A common rite in the klingon infantry in the middle of the 23rd century.

They are an intergalactic superpower and there is no variation? I'm no genetics expert, but I think some variation would be appropriate.

This isn't an additional variety of Klingon, otherwise Lrell and Kol would have hair, while others wouldn't. Unless they shaved it off, but clearly they didn't.

How is it not a variety of Klingon? They have a virus that mutates their very genetic code. I know that Klingons are not the brightest bunch (at least, post TOS) but idea that they are not trying to resolve the issue, especially with T'Kumva's "remain Klingon" is indicative that the Augment virus, among other Federation "intrusions" are a source of conflict within the Klingon Empire. So, the leadership might be more inclined to engineer themselves back to more "pure" Klingon.

It's ironic that the first Bat'leth design that actually looks like something a guy made by dipping his hair in lava comes along with the first Klingon design that doesn't have hair.

Personally, I would've loved it if that'd used the holo-confab in the Battle of the Binary Stars to show some traditional Klingons in the background. Throw in a TNG style, a TOS style, even a TUC and TMP and STID one for fun. They could still have T'Kuvma and Kor's houses be bald and big-headed (mostly) and put all their money there, and the hologram effect and location in the background would help hide that the alternate makeups didn't get as much love. But, then, I also would've been way more uptight about sound-effects continuity (why do Starfleet ships make the TNG hailing frequencies beep? Why do the Klingon ships have the VGR alert beep? Nothing makes sense!)
