Spoilers We now have Ship Class names for BotBS

But those measurements in meters don't work either. Both classes of ship are supposed to be 15 or so decks thick. It's hard to tell from the overhead views in that comparison picture above, but it looks as if they'd both be taller than the 24-deck Constitution class. So I just can't believe those measurements are accurate.

Maybe they just placeholders?
Eaglemoss uses the metric system for other ships on the magazine covers.

there's one way i can see out of this: if you figure eaglemoss made a mistake and the measurement really is supposed to be feet rather than meters, these numbers work if you only count the superstructure and not the nacelles. 228 meters for the discovery without engines gives it roughly the same volume as a constitution-class starship, also without its nacelles.

but that's a stretch. and feet would make the shenzhou really damn small.

Here's my ultra-quickie before bed.

That can't be right, given that Discovery reportedly has a crew complement of only 136, well below the Enterprise's Pike-era complement of 203. These classes should be smaller than the Connie. Is it possible those numbers are supposed to be in feet instead of meters?
Nope. All of the surface details are scaled to match. At 750 feet, the shuttlebay would be the size of two-car garage.

The longest naval vessel ever built, the aircraft carrier Enterprise CVN-65, was 342 meters long. The Yamato class ships in WWII, the largest battleships in existence at the time, were 263 meters long. There is nothing "tiny" about a 300-meter ship. It's actually pretty gigantic.
Sure, if the entire length of the ship is both contiguous and habitable. The TOS Enterprise is not; it's a modular structure of which no single part of it is longer than 180 meters or higher than about 40 meters.

Consider, on the other hand, the vehicle assembly building at cape canaveral; with a volume of 3.6 million cubic meters it is almost 15 times the size of the TOS Enterprise, and yet in its actual dimensions it is still too small for the Enterprise to fit inside of it.

An aircraft carrier is VERY LONG, but that is not the same thing as being VERY BIG.

these starships dwarf the constitution-class. we could remove the nacelles and they'd still be giants.
We remove the nacelles and Discovery would have a length of 470 meters, making it similar to the Excelsior class.

Interestingly, the Constitution class with Shenzhou's nacelles would be almost exactly the same length and probably similar volume to boot.

it's almost like they're precursors to some other, much larger starships, from some other universe...
It's EXACTLY like they're precursors to some other, much larger starships from some other universe.

To the same scale:

The TOS ship is clearly the odd man out.

ETA: Ninjad by King Daniel, as usual.:rommie:

Shenzhou is. Discovery is at least 25

^ it's a science vessel. They probably have a shit ton of lab space on board. Hell, Lorca has his own PRIVATE lab in the secondary hull full of deadly scary stabby things he's collected from all over the galaxy, and we happen to know that lab is on the starboard side by the window. There's probably an identical lab on the port side specifically devoted to Doctor Culber's cat.

What was the number of scientific missions Saru said the Discovery could perform at once? I remember it being big.

That could also explain the space.

Making these ships really big makes a lot of sense. Just like my phone is smaller than an old computer from the 1960s because technology is more advanced and compact now. The Discovery is so big cause it's a proto type, same with the Kelvin/Enterprise. The Real Enterprise doesn't need to be so big because it's an old well established and highly advanced starship. Bigger isn't always better!

What's weird about it? Discovery and Shenzhou both have warp nacelles that account for half of their length. Put those same engines on a TOS Constitution and it would come out to around 600 meters long.
And how about the Centaur in DS9? That ship was basically just a modified Excelsior-class saucer section with two nacelles. It definitely looks as ungainly and awkward as the Discovery does, just in its own way. It just isn't as glaring because the
Centaur has smooth, rounded nacelles and a more or less conventional shape and contours for a Federation starship and by the late 24th century it was not uncommon to see unique or otherwise unconventional ship designs.

Just like the Franklin. Whether some of us like it or not, some Starfleet vessels have the big transparent window viewscreens. Both the Franklin and the Kelvin would appear in Prime Starfleet Academy history texts as they appear in the Kelvin timeline films.
