I saw "Aquaman" in person at the LA Airport last June and his arm tattoo. He was tall and a very nice person. Talked to everybody.

I've always been more of D.C guy myself. Spiderman and the Hulk were my favorites from Marvel.

Arguments about "what a story meant" always remind me of that scene from Back to School in which a professor says whoever ghost-wrote the assignment "doesn't know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut." The funny thing is that Kurt Vonnegut was the person who ghost-wrote the paper.

You have completely misread The Godfather, on a level I didn't until now think was even possible.

The point of the story was supposed to be the horrors of Organized Crime....except they made it look deeply attractive. And they made Vito look like a total success who survived everything except natural aging while Michael's stint as the Don fails for how he does things differently from how Vito did them.

Absolutely wrong. That was the point of Goodfellas, which Scorsese followed up on with Casino and The Departed.

The overriding theme of The Godfather, and its sequels (the third is excellent outside of the helicopter shootout), is that eventually you must pay for your sins.

It was the point of all of them, and of course Goodfellas made the same mistake by making the Mob life look cool and attractive.

This has gotten WAY off topic.

Can the MODS steer the conversation back to being about DC superhero movies?

    Let me help..

Batman 1989 and The Dark Knight were HORRIBLE movies because the villain in both was too cool. I went to the Dark Knight screening and was horrified by all the teenagers wearing joker face paint. CLEARLY Tim Burton and Chris Nolan are filmmakers who don't understand that a good movie is one where all the best lines go to the hero and the villain is nothing more than a boring caricature that is never a threat to the hero.

    /sarcasm off

Eh, if folks walk away and the villain is the only thing they remember then you DID do something wrong. But Batman's always been more archetype than character, so he needed his villains to be memorable and colorful to make up for him.

Well, considering the fact that Tim Burton made Batman Returns, he really showed that with no restraint he was shit at making a Batman film. Hell, Batman 1989 gets a lot wrong (like Batman just becoming The Punisher with a better costume), but Keaton and Nicholson's performances really lift that movie up. Unfortunately Keaton gets about 10 minutes of screentime in "The Danny Devito being Disgusting While Michelle Pfeifer acts like a mental patient" Movie that they pretended was a sequel to Batman 1989, so he couldn't save that one (Batman Returns is, in my opinion, a MUCH worse movie then either Batman Forever or Batman & Robin).

Also, yeah, a good superhero movie has the hero at the center. Now, the villain should get good stuff too, and god knows the MCU has messed that up at times, but compared to Nolan and Burton who obviously didn't give a crap about Batman/Bruce Wayne as a character, the MCU has the better idea. If your hero is shit, you're making crap.

Returns is the best Batman movie to date.

Returns suffered from Burton clearly being more interested in Penguin, Catwoman and Shrek rather than Batman.

This tends to happen to DC much more often than Marvel.

Give me Tommy Lee Jones acting like an idiot or Uma Thurman putting in one of the worst performances in any mainstream superhero movie over the boring, gross slog that it Batman Returns. At least I can laugh at how bad Joel Schumacher's movies are. That's at least a "so bad its funny" level of entertainment, as opposed to the dark hole of entertainment that is Batman returns. Pure terrible Burton from before basically everything he did was terrible (so, kind of a sign of things to come).
