The X-Men Cinematic Universe (General Discussion)

Yeah, the movie few people wanted based on the X-Men character they seem to think is popular even though he's never been able to support an ongoing comic for more then 26ish issues (and that was over a decade ago, more recent stuff has lasted a good deal less) is probably going to bomb. He got really popular originally because of the 90s cartoon, but I think he's always worked best as a supporting player, not a solo act. Of all the X-Men who could get a solo movie, Gambit would be near the bottom of the list of characters I think deserve one.

For once I actually agree with you. Of all of the possible choices for a solo movie, Gambit does seem like an odd choice. I just don't really see him being popular enough to draw in the kind of crowd these movies need.
I'm not going to totally write it off before we see a trailer or anything, but it's definitely pretty low on my list of movies I'm anticipating.

Eh, the real bottom of the barrel scraping is the proposed Multiple Man movie...which is just going to be an excuse for James Franco to have an orgy with copies of himself.

Gambit was never more than an ancillary character. His whole schtick was that whenever they ran into a bad guy he'd recognize Gambit from a past encounter and wonder why he was trying to be good now. It got to the point you'd expect Thanos to show up and say they went to High School together.

I started reading comics in the late 80s and early 90s. That was when Wizard Magazine had just started. I was always a DC guy. Characters like Gambit were a huge reason I was baffled by the huge popularity of the X-men. Ridiculous costume and powers. I watched the cartoon enjoyed it a certain degree but the character designs and animation seemed inferior to what was being done with Batman. Even the Spider-man series was better.

I mostly enjoy the X-men movies. Partially because I have a vague familiarity with the characters and stories. I am not disappointed in the changes. Most of their costumes in the comics seemed very arbitrary and constantly changing. I liked the ending of Apocalypse I do know those costumes. It would be nice if those stay around or something close.

On the one hand Peter david's outright amazing X-Factor run (the long running one with MM, M, Layla Miller, etc, not his original run or that atrocious "All New" run) made me into a fan of multiple Man and I'd like to see a good version of him. On the other hand, i'd really only want to see him in an X-Factor movie, which will never happen, and I certainly don't want to see James Franco play him.

I always liked Gambit in theory, and in the early 90s when I would run home from soccer games to watch the cartoon he was probably even my favorite, but he never realized his potential in any of the comics I read. He's basically a snarky Cajun Han Solo with a flair for the dramatic; what's not to like?

I'm not well read when it comes to the X-men comics, so most of my experience is through the old 90's cartoon. Based on that, Gambit always seemed like a fairly two dimensional character compared to most of the others. A good side character, but I have trouble seeing him able to carry a good story on his own..

Mind you, that also describes a lot of X-men characters, since with a few exceptions, most of them were designed to be part of an ensemble and that is how they work best. I mean who would want to see a solo Cyclopes movie? Or a Jubilee movie? Not really very much to work with there.
Rogue might actually work since if they go with her semi-villainous origin it could also heavily involve Mystique and now maybe even Captain Marvel!

Cyclops is supposed to be like the X-Men version of Cap, and the MCU has done wonders with him.
Cap always had a lot more to work with, what with the whole "man out of time" angle and embodying the moral and ethical ideals of a simpler time (and all of the grit of the reality of said time not exactly holding up to said ideal.)

Scott Summers on the other hand tends to come off as the quintessential two dimensional boy scout. Even more so than Cap or even classic Superman ever was. The "good son". There's not a lot to his background that really informs any of this, it's just how he is.
Again; unlike other comic book heros, most X-men characters are designed to function as part of an ensemble cast and so don't fair as well on their own. In Scott's case, his main function is to be the voice of reason that other more interesting characters disregard in order for exciting things to happen. Take that team away, and he just falls over flat like the cardboard standee that he is.

Also, Captain America existed for years with his own line long before the Avengers came along, and after he was revived for the Avengers, he resumed having his own line. Whereas Cyclops was created for a team and also almost always existed within the context of a team. As far as I know, he's never had his own solo series.

The time displaced teenage Cyclops did have a "solo" series from 2014-2015, but that focused a lot on his relationship with his father, so I think it might have been more of a Cyclops/Corsair team up book than true solo series.
