At least QT seems to understand Star Trek.

Intrestingly Harlan Ellison's original City on the Edge of Forever had a recreational drug use storyline.

I stress absolutely I love the Kelvinverse but JJ seems openly prefers Star Wars which is evident in his two movies.

QT seems to be a lifelong fan from this (fascinating to hear his opinions btw, including critique of the Kelvinverse, his love for TOS. He says he likes TNG and mentions Yesterday's Enterprise):

I look forward to seeing what he does despite not being able to finish Kill Bill because of the gore :P Having a director of that calibre might boost the franchise

"Yesterday's Enterprise" was the original "goes nowhere, does nothing" reset button episode. Not saying I don't like it...but I think it is massively over-rated. Because virtually nothing happens.

Is there something wrong with that...
The purpose of sending Enterprise-C back was to maintain status quo, in a way.

And? I don't necessarily need a fan helming every step of the way with a franchise. I really don't. That is a very dangerous road to walk down because then the elements that a person is a fan of in a show become the only elements.

I'd rather take my chances on a professional filmmaker who's a fan of the franchise than a professional filmmaker who's trying to turn Trek into another franchise that he's a fan of.

It's a fine balancing act to be sure, and I can see the advantages in both. But, I always worry that fans will make, well, fan films, and not good films. They can be both but that is rare.

Star Wars is a dying franchise that the graverobbers At Disney are running into the ground.

This is the perfect time for Paramount to do something new and innovative with Trek.

    "Graverobbers?" O_o

Really? GL left someone in charge of LFL that he had known for years.

Star Trek's time is always ripe for new and innovative, not when Star Wars does something else.

Posting something doesn't make it so.

As a franchise, Star Wars is going from success to success and growing. Trek doesn't even make it on to that map.

Cinematic Trek should not be produced by the same man who has a series he treats more preferentially. I like the Abrams films alright, especially Beyond, but it needs to be in other hands. A Tarantino trek movie would be interesting, and I have heard people talk about it since the news story who never talk about star trek at all.

Nothing "wrong" with it. I just don't really like it.

Is there something wrong with THAT?

I just got the impression that you didn't like it because that kind of storytelling usually gets bashed.

It'd be hilarious if Tarantino's idea is something that slightly parodies Trek and its fans, breaking the fourth wall a couple of times and going deliberately way over the top with some aspects a few times too. That would be awesome.

Based on Tarantino's interview, he comes off as a casual fan only, not one who has memorized all of the episodes and the lingo. There's definitely a fondness for it, but it's not obssessive/otaku-grade. This would probably prevent him from taking things down a fanservice continuity-porn direction. It would be a story that thematically is Star Trek but very loosely bound to continuity. Almost like a Tarantino fever-dream. Could be quite engaging as a one-off experiment but it would be a hard sell if the suits at Paramount proclaimed it 100% canonical just as a lot of people won't swallow Discovery as canon.

Movie studios generally do want as many people as possible to see their big budget movies. More people = more money = more likely the studio will get a return on their $150+ million investment. That's why the majority of such big movies are PG-13. It's a lesser problem for medium budget movies and even less so for small budget movies, though.

Maybe the prospect of a much smaller budget Trek movie is part of Tarantino's proposal.

It takes a special level of lousy writing to be told you can write a movie where Kirk and Picard meet, and to screw it up. Yet they did it.

If there is some sort of Doctor Who 50th Anniversary level story that brings together Star Trek in a way that never has been done before, where at the end, Kirk's death in Generations is undone and we see Shatner as an older Kirk to prove it, no one would be happier than me.

But Paramount has never shown any willingness to do this.
