MLB 17-18 Offseason: The Giants are preparing for EYBS' return

I don't think the ARod deal sunk over the salary dump portion, it was that the Red Sox were trying to restructure his deal as part of it, and i think it was going to end up with him taking less.

What's the difference between a straight salary dump trade and a waiver claim that the owning team just lets through?

looks like the remaining $ on the deal is 11 years, 281M. $25.5M for 11 years. Not sure anyone is signing ANYONE to that, although he could get slightly more per year if he would sign 6-7 years instead of 11. Add in the opt out which means he's either leaving if he's good or staying if you're screwed, and how much would you give up to get that deal on your books.

In your 'fair trade', would you consider any of that? of course not. If the money was a wash, maybe you talk, but you're off by hundreds of millions of dollars, so no. Would you want to the Cubs to pick Stanton up if his contract was available for nothing? If you even hesitate on that answer, that's the problem. It's a TON of money, for a TON of years. It will prevent you from doing other things to fix future rosters. And if he gets hurt, your team is done for a decade. It's a tricky spot. Oh, and the Marlins wants a couple of your best prospects too...

Aaron bleepin Boone is the next manager of the New York Yankees.

Better than Girardi?

Well, when you're looking for a PR win after the wildly unpopular move of sacking Girardi ... eh, there are worse ways to go than hiring the guy who hit that moonshot against the Red Sox.

The Cubs tendered contract offers to Kris Bryant, Justin Grimm, Kyle Hendricks, Tommy La Stella, Addison Russell and Justin Wilson, but Hector Rondon became a free agent

It must be slim pickins if they made an offer to Grimm. It seemed like he'd be out the door with Rondon.

I can't shake the feeling that Boone was picked so he could be a figurehead for Cashman. I really hope I'm wrong about this.

That's absolutely what he is. The current hot trend is for field managers to be mouthpieces for the front office.

Oh, absolutely.

Yep. Still, let's see what next season brings. Boone grew up in a respected three generations baseball family. I can't imagine him being a total mouthpiece or having the line-up dictated by the front office.

Bret Boone is a douchebag and Bob Boone sold out his union. Fuck them.

Really? Didn't know that. I keep reading about this storied "baseball family."

Bret Boone literally just the other day said sexual harassment is "liberal BS."

Bob Boone, knowing that the strength of the MLBPA was its solidarity, talked to MLB ownership during labor negotiations and said that there were players willing to give concessions (or "give-backs") regarding salary arbitration, which led to a rollback in how many years players were eligible for arbitration. Seriously, fuck him.

Was he lying?

There was a cadre of older players who, having enjoyed the fruits of the MLBPA's work in the '60s, didn't think that it was worth sticking out in a labor dispute and had no issue with concessions being given to ownership in exchange for younger players getting fucked: "Fuck you, got mine," basically. Boone and I think Molitor were the leaders of that small group and both of them can go to hell, because they sold out their union and as a result the union got fucked, hard.

Yeah, players have it so tough in arbitration...

The point is that back in that negotiation, the union surrendered more years of team control, and it never would have if assholes like Boone hadn't said, "oh, hey, we think Fehr's being a cock, so you're talking to a divided union."

Generally speaking, arbitration is a good thing (until MLB fires the arbitrator because it doesn't like his legal basis, whatup Shyam Das).

The Marlins say they are not going to pursue Ohtani, because the $20 million posting fee is "too expensive."

Uh, Jeets, you aren't too good at this. I can't wait for him to lowball every draft pick next year and the first guy who signs is some high school kid from Oregon drafted in, like, the 38th.

Shohei Ohtani has narrowed his choice to seven teams -- the Dodgers, Angels, Padres, Giants, Mariners, Rangers and Cubs -- according to multiple reports.

I'm not sure what to think. He could be spectacular. But how much will the team have to play him? I mean, if he really stinks it up as a hitter vs. MLB pitching, will they be obligated to keep running him out there as a position player (NL) or a DH (AL)?

The Cubs are the only non-West team left on the list. Does Maddon have something to do with that?

Danny will be happy -- supposedly Rogers is exploring selling the Blue Jays.
