I don't think the ARod deal sunk over the salary dump portion, it was that the Red Sox were trying to restructure his deal as part of it, and i think it was going to end up with him taking less.
What's the difference between a straight salary dump trade and a waiver claim that the owning team just lets through?
looks like the remaining $ on the deal is 11 years, 281M. $25.5M for 11 years. Not sure anyone is signing ANYONE to that, although he could get slightly more per year if he would sign 6-7 years instead of 11. Add in the opt out which means he's either leaving if he's good or staying if you're screwed, and how much would you give up to get that deal on your books.
In your 'fair trade', would you consider any of that? of course not. If the money was a wash, maybe you talk, but you're off by hundreds of millions of dollars, so no. Would you want to the Cubs to pick Stanton up if his contract was available for nothing? If you even hesitate on that answer, that's the problem. It's a TON of money, for a TON of years. It will prevent you from doing other things to fix future rosters. And if he gets hurt, your team is done for a decade. It's a tricky spot. Oh, and the Marlins wants a couple of your best prospects too...
