Insanity is hereditary innit?

Bill Veeck wasn't insane, so much, but more that he never forgot the importance of making a buck whenever possible, and he also never forgot that cities don't owe their teams anything, meaning he understood the importance of entertaining the people who actually showed up to the games. And, really, so much of the stuff that he brought to baseball that's now just considered part of the experience (like fireworks) was considered insane at the time. It's weird how badly the other owners hated him, considering how much money he made them.

Yeah, I'm being (mostly) sarcastic. But there are different kinds of insantiy, some of them are a lot of fun.

God, that midget stunt was amazing.

Veeck always did have a weird fascination with them.

If an owner ordered something like that done--and MLB's bylaws didn't already explicitly prohibit it--Cowboy Joe would have had the owner ejected, then challenged him to a fight in the parking lot after the game.

Dee Gordon is on his way from Miami to Seattle. To play CF for the Mariners.
Story
Seattle also received international slot money from Miami in exchange for minor leaguers Robert Dugger, Nick Neidert and Christopher Torres.
The cost cutting begins here.

The Cubs pay $38M for 3 years to Tyler Chatwood, the owner of an 8-15 record in Colorado last season.
Story

The Gordon move feels like Jerry Dipoto is going all-in on signing Ohtani, whereas the Chatwood thing is just ... like, dude, he had one good year on the road and the rest of the time he's gotten tarred and feathered pretty much everywhere he's gone. His xFIP is horrifying.

There's always at least one team that thinks it can "fix" a guy like that. This time, it's the Cubs' turn.

Bosio fixed Arrieta a few years back, maybe Hickey sees something with Chatwood he thinks he can fix.

Apparently, Giancarlo Staton won't approve a trade to the Giants or the Cardinals, the two teams that were actively talking to the Marlins. The teams he "would like" to play for are the 4 CS teams (Dodgers, Yankees, Cubs, Astros).

Not sure what most of those teams would even have to offer Miami. The Cubs certainly have a bare cupboard, unless they could take on the entire contract.

Story

Gives the Stanton story kinda a gross feel, sorta like a bad NBA trade or manipulation to create a super-team. He's decided that his desired teams are (totally coincidentally, I'm sure) the final 4 teams from the playoffs this year. Ugh. I mean, sorta has to go to a high payroll team anyway, so it was always going to feel like a 'rich getting richer' situation (at least at first, forget years from now when he's still getting paid), but to just blatantly call out the top 4 teams as the only ones you're interested in...

Especially when none of those teams really make any sense for him or have shown any interest. Dodgers and Yankees can afford it but are actively trying to reduce payroll somewhat. (LOL for the Dodgers, but hey). Astros seem unlikely to suddenly jump into mega-contract status, especially when some of their own players will need $$$ soon, dunno if there's a Cubs fit or not.

Certainly his right to pick his team, and everyone wants to get a ring, but if you're a 300M player, you should be able to help CREATE the team that gets the ring, shouldn't have to hide on a super-team.

A chorus of "WE HAVE THIS KYLE SCHWARBER" begins echoing through the Midwest.

If the Marlins were in the AL, and if Jeter was brain damaged, then maybe that would work. I love Schwarbs, always have, and I know his value isn't that great, but if they could get a decent pitcher or two for him, I'd support that.

If the stories are to be believed, Jeter sits naked on his couch watching highlights of himself while shouting YEAH JEETS, so ... here's hoping. Because I so desperately want that to be true.

The Angels have landed Ohtani.

Shoutout to the Mariners for literally betting the farm on him and losing out. (Edit: They traded their 2, 7 and 10 prospects from a farm that's already regarded as weak for an additional million in international pool money and the entirety of Dee Gordon's contract. lolllllllllllllllllllllll)

Edit 2: According to Sam Miller, the Angels were the only team that would agree to Ohtani pitching and hitting every day. So ... his arm falls off in June and the Angels get to waste the prime years of two generational talents.

Yeah, that seems like a fun sideshow, but can't see how it works. If he's even good enough to justify being in the lineup OR the rotation, much less both. Unless he got it crystal clear in his contract, I'd expect it to be a fun thing a couple times that they get out of his system by spring training, and then he finds out he's only pitching (or hitting, but probably pitching).

At best, they get to have a fun option in interleague games, because the pitcher may not be useless at the plate.

AL at least makes sense, as you can drop him in DH on occasion without as much risk as throwing him out in the field. Angels HAVE a DH already, but whatever.

He'd have been interesting, but can't say I was rooting for the Red Sox to get him. Has that 'trainwreck coming' vibe all over it.

Well, that's not so surprising. I figured it would be an American League team on the West Coast. I shall be intrigued to see if this great experiment will work.
