Great episodes with ONE moment that make you cringe

They actually really know how it works, but it's too dangerous to give the public details or they'd build their own time machines and go back in time and insist the writers compose a better story, or not make a particular mistake, and all too often that's just subjective desires and not objective requirements, so it's still impossible to please everybody all of the time, and the next thing you know it, you have a flash time mob where you didn't before. And then you'll trouble. Then the group who don't care about Who drop in just to see the time mob or cause further mischief. It's a nasty business, time travel. Best to keep it under wraps.

 

Somebody from the 24th century can't think that pretending prejudice didn't happen is bad?

 

The way it's handled in the script is too obvious. It breaks immersion for me, like the characters in a television stop stopping for product placement. TOS frequently did that, between "The Omega Glory" and the episode with the painted faces, but DS9's stories and characters were usually handled more skilfully than that.

 

Bashir didn't seem to think so when he was a RAF pilot. Pretending is what the holodeck's all about.

Everyone's ancestors got screwed over by someone else's ancestors, how many centuries do you hang on to it?

 

Odds are, if you go back far enough, you have ancestors on both sides of some issue, feverishly screwing over the opposition as best they can because the other guys having it coming.

To learn from history, nobody can afford to forget it. Just remember, no matter what your ancestor did or had done to them, it didn't happen to you, and you didn't do it to them, whatever the issue of the day. But the lessons are still worthwhile and necessary, lest one make the same mistakes they did.

 

Mulder & Scully, er, Dulmer and Lucsly in Trials and Tribbleations always got on my tits.

William Windom's overacting in The Doomsday Machine. "Don't you think I know that"!, etc, both ruins the episode and is hilarious at the same time.

Cirroc Lofton's acting in The Visitor. I love this episode but the scene where Cirroc is trying to force cry while Sisko is on the biobed always makes me cringe.

Odo putting on a tuxedo in What You Leave Behind. I don't know why I dislike this seen but I just do. I think it's because I wasn't hugely fond of the Kira/Odo romance.

 

So the manufactured image of Hell in 'The Cage'/'The Menagerie' is apparently "From a fable [Pike] once heard in childhood", but Kirk in 'Who Mourns For Adonais?' responds to Apollo with 'Mankind has no need for gods. We find the one quite adequate'.

Which god is that then? Always took me out of the episode because I couldn't work out which he was talking about?

 

I had assumed in large part the "one" God is a vague, monotheistic idea that applies to the creator of the universe who probably doesn't actively interfere with his/her/its creation, and further details are not necessary. It's just a general acknowledgement to any who adhere to a monotheistic point of view, and the so-called God is that one - the one - whatever your personal beliefs may be that might make that one God somehow different from another person's or culture's one God, you can believe those, but not insist on it of others, and nor can they insist their POV is the one and only correct version of the one God. It's all the same God - the one God, the creator of the universe.

If one does not adhere to monotheism in general, you might ask which God, but you'd be told it is just a general reference to a monotheistic belief of a supreme creator of the universe, whoever or whatever that may be.

If one does adhere to monotheism, there is no reason to ask which God.

If one adheres to atheism, as long as the culture is tolerant and not insistent one accept and adopt their POV, or else, they should just let it slide without much comment since few atheists really feel the need to make converts, and if they aren't hurting anyone by their beliefs, they should be allowed to believe what they want, pretty much under the philosophy of the Golden Rule - that is, you wouldn't want somebody forcing their religious beliefs on you, so you shouldn't try to force yours on others.

From all that, I suspect Kirk is a monotheist, and he feels no reason to ask which one, or insist on a particular one.

I'd like to assume Earth's major monotheistic religions adopted that policy by Kirk's time, and while they may hold certain attributes to their God, and which may be different in some regards to another monotheist's God's attributes, they are both tolerant of one another's differences and do not seek to impose their religious POV on others. Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and maybe other monotheistic beliefs may all happily acknowledge this general belief in - the one - without fighting about it.

It's a very minor difference shown, mainly the black cloth at the end of his uniform sleeve (whereas on his proper timeline uniform, there is no "black cuff"). [PHOTO LINK]. It's extremely fleeting. You don't really see a lot of footage capturing it and in the dim light of Ten-Forward, so I think it's very minor. I never would have noticed it otherwise.

 

So, when "they" come to the end of their lifes and pass, and four centuries elapse, would that be a good time to stop hanging on to it?

And if your woes persist, perhaps the cause of those woes are not the long dead people you blame your woes upon?

Maybe they never were.
