Is Discovery your new favorite Star Trek series?

Way too early to call, we're eight episodes in. Comparing only to the first eight of the others, it probably would vie for first place against TOS. But as best series overall, no. Probably already better than VOY or ENT ever were, but that's a pretty low bar and there's better further down the road in TOS, TNG and DS9. Discovery needs to hit some ten-score episodes to compete in the overall stakes. I'm confident, it's had a great start, and at current quality level I'll carry on watching and enjoying. I'm now waiting for a Duet, or a Best of Both Worlds to know it's a contender for the big leagues

I need to do that with TOS.
What is with that screaming pointy ear guy and why does he liked blue plants so much? Why didn't they even give a name to that cold emotionless female first officer? A transparent dome on the top of a spaceship!?

Hey, we all have to start somewhere. Some start with filming local theater productions and public access programming, others with multi-million-dollar franchise shows for a major broadcaster released on the internet. Once they learn the basics, they could one day film an episode or two of The Big Bang Theory.

Too many hacks nowadays setting the tone... unfortunately. The reboot movies were also plagued by the same shaky cam-lens-flares-syndrome as this latest show by CBS carrying the name 'Star Trek'.

True, the number of lens flares seems to be somewhat reduced in subsequent episodes, but there's always a certain amount of lens flares present, even when there's no light source that might be causing those lens flares. Which is just ridiculous.

The camera is shaking in almost every scene as if filmed by an amateur or a person with trembling hands. Terrible.

Are we talking about the last episode, or the series in general? I haven't seen the last episode yet, but I haven't noticed much in the way of shaky cam in the first seven episodes. I'm actually hard pressed to think of when it has happened.

And I'm not a fan of Discovery, thus far.

Yeah I'm not seeing the shaky cam either. If anything, the old Trek shaky bridge camera seems to have largely gone.

I hardly say “deep” into discovery.

Remember how bad TNG was in the 1st season? We barely 1/3rd of the way of a typical season.

Considering there have only been 5 prior Star Trek TV series (6 if you count TAS) that kind of goes without saying, doesn't it?

TOS, while dated, is still the best Trek IMO. This show has possibilities, but based on the episodes so far, it's nothing more than an above average scifi show with nice special effects. The only reason it gets extra consideration from me is it's got "Star Trek" in the title. Which, in a sense, also hurts it because Star Trek has so much history for comparison.

It's certainly the best start to any Trek series.

I'm worried they're going to hit the reset button or come up with some convoluted storyline to tie in with canon though, so I'll reserve judgment until the end of the season.

I think part of it, for me, is I'm used to televised Trek giving me new things to chew on and the novels doing the kind of "detailing" of the universe that this show is doing. I don't feel that Discovery is really adding anything new to the tapestry that is Star Trek.

At this point I'm just looking for entertaining tv, and I'm a bit of an easy mark. But it isn't giving us anything new,

I almost thought it'd be better to give us a series between TOS films and TNG era, something in the time and era of the enterprise B, maybe more dealings with classic romulans, we never got a lot of them during TOS, they're kinda mysterious, woulda been cool to explore.

Maybe a future trek where we've entered into a whole other galaxy,

something new and exciting.

Heck, I'd have been more interested if they had dropped Burnham's connection to Sarek, and replaced the Klingons with the Tholians, or even the Romulans. Don't much care if it violates continuity. If they can put a band-aid on what they're doing now, they could've done it with the Romulans.

It actually manages to finish last behind TAS, DS9 and VGR for me. A well earned, very expensive entry at 7th place.
