I'm going to start doing this now.

    "You watching Star Trek?"

    "No. The other Ting."

It was a little strange hearing Al Green on Star Track, but isn't everyone glad they weren't playing techno, with laser light show and glowsticks?

Because that happens a lot in futuristic sci fi.

I suppose the one thing that throws me off about the music choices is that high-quality copies of those recordings would actually survive over the next 230(?) years.

Still, not a party with young people looking to dance and hang out, so not really the same thing.

BTW, my dismay at a group of people partying to centuries old dance music is tempered by hearing an Al Green song on a Star Trek episode. That was sublime.

Wyclef Jean built a vault, deep beneath the earth. The entrance was discovered beneath the rubble of his palace after ww3.

Ok. That was poor. you expect a few duds when they were producing 26 episodes a season, but when they produce only 15?

That still doesn't make it work for Discovery .. I mean how would it? I don't get that kind of 'argument'. Discovery is screwing with it's era.. answer.. other Star Trek has stuffed up too. :wtf:

I'm really digging Lorca. He's got this kind of hardassed Mac Calhoun thing going on. In fact, one of the first New Frontier had a similar bit to tonight's episode where the Science Officer requested permission to leave the bridge for a moment and he told her she was an adult who he trusted to be able to go to the bathroom or whatever and make it back in a reasonable period of time.

It made sense that Lorca would be a bit shorter about it; Burnham and Tyler were only called to the bridge because of the bogey. They were off-duty, and once the creature was ID'd they didn't even need to be up there at all, never mind asking permission to do something else.

You can't dance to that stuff. Who can find the beat in a fucking √2/4 time signature?

Indeed, this was addressed in the TNG episode "Ethics", in which Worf was paralyzed and was only cured thanks to unethical medical practices and Klingon organ redundancies.

Hell, for that matter, even Pike was confined to a wheelchair.

I think the BeeGees version standing the test of time for 240 years is more believable.

It's something Star Trek in general has ALWAYS done (IE use colloquial terms because it's ENTERTAINMENT)- so why suddenly do you expect ST: D to not do it?

Discovery presented itself specifically in an era it chose to reference to another. Wanted to exploit the connections.. least they can do is try to be consistent. If they want to be groovy fine. The dance party didn't fit.

What exactly are you talking about? Using 20th Century music in a show that takes place in the 23rd? Why is that a problem?

If Captain Kirk can listen to the Beastie Boys so can they listen to Wyclef. My issue is that beer pong is inappropriate while on a starship.

Keep that restricted to starbase and shore leave.

Kirk, Bones, and even Scotty got drunk as well as laid all the time but only on planets!
