Okay, I'll stand for a lot of unrealism in Trek, but out of all the contemporary rap that survived to the 23rd century, they pick Wyclef Jean's cover of Stayin Alive? That makes The Orville's contemporary references seem reasonable. It's barely remembered in 2017.

I'd imagine that's exactly why they picked it. Sounds contemporary and 'party like' but most people wouldn't recognise it specifically.

I'm fairly certain "Staying Alive" is my personal anthem.

It should be the Admirals as well, doubt they would survive any longer though.

Of course. I'm fairly certain it's a requirement.

The cringey party scene is a perfect example of what ST does poorly regardless of the era.

Cute response, but it was not a child molestation joke, unless you are alleging that both the characters in question are under age or that Spacey molested Rapp, which Rapp has not alleged.

You're probably going to want to find a better hill.

Amazing song, yes. I love the Bee Gees, and have since I was little. I grew up idolizing them, and listened to all their records (thanks mom!).

I love to hate Lorca. He's like an anti-Picard or a less moral version of Sisko. He's a great addition to Star Trek because it adds more dimension to the Captain's Chair.

And I feel conflicted. This season will probably end with him getting killed or arrested. This will certainly make me happy, but at the same time I will miss having this evil bastard around. If someone doesn't space him before that, it will be nice seeing whoever takes the command of the Discovery visiting him in prison in order to get advice in those moments when "it's impossible to make things right". ;)

I found this one to be more entertaining than last week, and who knew that people in the prime timeline listened to anything except jazz and classical.

Can't believe they could do that to Mudd, it's inhuman!

So there's some "Rare groove collector" type person on the ship who'se handling the playlist for the night.

I think of it like this, they have the occasional party, and they might well be themed. For all we can imagine, the previous week was Rigellian tone poem music party and the next one will be 22nd century Death Zydeco.

Gave it an 8, but could even go 9. That was a lot of fun. Like other critics, I wasn't a fan of how cutesy the resolution was with handing Mudd over to an adoring wife and apparently indulgent father-in-law. (From the exposition given before the pair beamed over, I expected the dad to be furious with Mudd and the plan was to let him make Mudd's life a living hell.) Other than that, it was a really solid story with the characters at probably thier most likeable. Even Lorca's asshole routine was charming this time. Like Mudd, I also enjoyed seeing him die over and over.

The only other downside was how derivative the time-loop element felt, which I guess makes it good that they downplayed it in favor of character work.

If it was the Bee Gees Stayin Alive it would have made a lot more sense than Wyclef Jean's. :)

I thought the episode was good for 30 minutes, but the ending was a bit poor. It's like Mudd has the entire computer wired to be invincible until the last loop when he's suddenly completely powerless. And the plot they had to finally beat him should have taken more than 10 minutes to organize. It seemed like "It's time for the episode to end. Okay umm they win this time." They set up a great premise then didn't make an effort to earn the resolution. But still, at least they're finally making the characters memorable.

If I recall correctly, Lorca and Cornwell were listening to smooth jazz while they were drinking in his quarters. Seemed appropriate.
