Yeah, I'm not ragging on the writers and creators-- they had an incredibly tough job. Tight budgets, tight schedules, and a heap ton of network restrictions.
Yeah, it really is a ridiculous claim. That's not remotely the way casting works. When you are casting, you are focused on all the things that actually matter, which is a hard enough job. Anyone who suggested an effort be made to copy some unrelated video game characters would be laughed out of the room.
Also, a gay couple where one has light coloring and the other dark is not some unique innovation. This is the default approach you use whenever you're casting two characters of the same sex that are going to be frequently paired. You want to get two guys who look notably different because it visually scans better. This is how we ended up with so many buddy movies with one white guy and one black guy.
That's even setting aside the fact that the characters don't actually resemble the actors that much. Anyone who thinks the blond guy looks like Anthony Rapp is in urgent need of an eye doctor.
Yes, I was mostly referring to this forum where the poster is supposedly getting criticized for not liking Discovery (because of the camera work among other things that can be debated ad nauseum). General polls on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes are suspect anyway, especially when voting is open before 1 episode has even aired and where people can just vote 1 star without watching.
But I think that what is more important for DSC than internet polls is the amount of overall "interest" in DSC. Because so many of the people who vote that they don't like the show in those polls, are likely still avid watchers. This forum is kind of proof of that. Many of the people who profess to not like the show (and I'm not disputing that they don't), still watch. Call it the "Howard Stern Syndrome".
My reading of why Enterprise failed is basically that Berman/Braga alienated all of the Trek writers by that point, meaning they had to write the first three seasons all by themselves. At the same time, the studio was heavily interfering in the "creative process" (if you can call it that) mostly for the worse. E.g., the studio was even more risk averse than Bannon/Braga (killing the idea of the first season being set on Earth, for example), which is why we got two more seasons of Voyager with a different cast rather than a real prequel. By the time the show began retooling, fans lost interest.
This is a joke, right? The most bland, lifeless Trek is "worth following"? The Trek show that was so boring, it was on the verge of cancellation every season because nobody was watching?
If you find DSC dull, man, you've got to check that head of yours. Think it's too grim for Trek? Fair enough. You don't like the story? Ok, that's fine, I get it. Too action and effects heavy? I'd disagree, but it's a point you can fairly make. You don't find the characters appealing?
Ok, so it's not the kind of show you like. Fine. But dull? Pull another one.
Ya know, why not? I have cryptically dropped several hints about this several times on this forum and no one caught on. Lol. I've heard this from several sources now, so spilling the beans won't get any one person in trouble. Now, mind you, what I'm going to say was in consideration late summer 2016. So I don't know if these plans are still concrete. Also, possible SPOILERS IN THE PARAGRAPH BELOW.
Last I heard (late summer 2016) CBS is considering having the Enterprise show up in some fashion at the end of Season 2 in an episode of Discovery. This will launch a spin-off show about the Enterprise's missions under Pike that will air during Discovery's downtime and visa versa. Whether this is still CBS's strategy going forward...I don't know. Maybe they've changed their mind now and will do something else. This was just the last information I heard which may or may not still be accurate.
<Spoiler tag added by cultcross - that's big enough to deserve two warnings >
I don't see Enterprise as being particularly unique, and certainly not in its first two seasons. Like Voyager, there were some superficial differences, but it was still the same planet / alien of the week stuff that we got on Next Generation.
It is a part of a larger franchise, at least in my case. It would be a show in trouble if only sixty percent liked it and those that didn't were dropping off because they have no attachment to it.

Yet was watched by more people first run than any of the spinoffs.
why would anyone think this is true? Because some guy on a message board said "his sources" told him?
I have friends at Paramount and I was told the sequel to Beyond is on the verge of a green light, and my sources say it will be a crossover with the prime timeline, and Patrick Stewart will return as Ambassador Picard.
Funny thing is I've seen at least 3 places online where a commenter said something to the effect that "if the rumor about an upcoming Captain Pike show is true..." yet I have not seen any actual rumor outside of those comments.
to be fair, 2 shows airing in alternating schedules isn't as overbearing as 3 shows with one season each, 1 show with two seasons, plus a team up series, followed by a spin-off of another one of those shows and additional seasons for the other 3.... since CBS all access has very little original content, they can't afford to have down time.
and you know, it seems like they've got a perfectly good shenzhou bridge set just laying around that they could put to use...
