Discovery Renewed for Season 2

No reason why those days can't come back again. As long as each show has their own showrunners and writers... 52 Star Trek episodes a year is a bit much, no reason why it can't be 26 divided between two TV series.

As for the movies, I doubt Paramount will wait for 5, 6 or 7 years to produce another Star Trek movie...
^^^
I like ST: D a lot, but I doubt it'll run 6 to 7 seasons. Time will tell - and given Paramount waited 4 years between was WAS A HIT (ST2009) and STID (still the highest grossing Star Trek feature film to date) - yeah, I COULD see them waiting 5 to 6 years after STB (which didn't bomb, but did under perform <--- I liked it too BTW.)

It was a great time. I was 10yo back then. There was Trek merchandise EVERYWHERE like there is Star Wars stuff today. I could go to my local Walmart and they'd have next gen toys on the shelf. All the toy stores had starship model kits. Ah, nostalgia.

Heck, in 1992 I walked into a record store and they had a display of CD washer gadgets of some sort at the cash register - and these things were branded with a photograph of Worf.

I mean, the words "Star Trek" didn't appear on the packaging, no cute references in the name of the thing or the copy on the box that I recall...but some manufacturer thought it was worth the license money to slap a publicity still of Worf on their product completely out of context. For some reason.

If Anas Abdin decides to sue CBS for copyright infringement, there won't be a second season. The whole of STD is his 2014 "Tardigrades" steam game, lock, stock and barrel.

if there's merit here, they'll settle and discovery will go on as if it never happened. but this seems like a coincidence.

You don't think that CBS has the financial muscle to either settle this or drag it out so long that the creator of the game is a bitter old man? The Tardigrade portion of the show is over. Even if they did deliberately steal it, it wouldn't stop the show from going forward.

There's nothing to settle. Conceptual similarity is not sufficient to make a real legal case for plagiarism. Even if it's plagiarism. ;)

I'm quite certain that there are several full-time staffers sitting around, eagerly looking at all the thoughtful and intelligent "audience critique" taking place right now, and compiling it all in a usable and comprehensive fashion to help them produce a much better, more fan-approved season 2 of the show.

I have twice worked on shows where this was actually one of my duties! Taking the fan mail (it was long enough ago that mail was still a thing) and the message board responses and translating it into a very simplistic spreadsheet, just breaking everything down into a count of either positive or negative responses to characters, stories, romantic pairings. X number of people had positive thoughts about this coupling, Y number of people expressed negative feelings about this character, etc.

Not coincidentally, both those shows were terrible...

Very interesting indeed...!

Yeah, I don't see it. Sure they both had large space traveling tardigrades, but that doesn't prove anything. Also, is part of the hypothetical plagiarism claim that Discovery specifically cast actors to resemble the characters from the game? Really? So, not only did whoever it was decide to rip off this really really obscure game, but they told the casting director to find two gay actors that look like "darker skinned guy with a beard" and "lighter skinned guy, possibly with a beard" for a relationship? Really? Why would anyone do this?

No way.

I agree with 99% of what you're sayin but, a giant space traveling tardigrade, is kinda, specific and a pretty specific coincidence.

tardigrades are popular nowadays, or at least identifiable. also, the producers recently revealed on after trek that they had initially intended to have a tardigrade character on the bridge, i suspect ripper's appearance in the series stems from that, not this game.

That's not a sufficient standard for plagiarism, sorry.

Unless, you know, Abdin invented tardigrades.

Yes there will. If CBS is sued and merit is established - they'll just settle on an amount, and CBS will chalk it up to cost of production.

The Tardigrades thing is interesting, but worst case scenario they pull a Terminator/Harlan Ellison, and pay him a fee with a small credit "Acknowledgement to the works of Some Guy Who Once Had A Concept That Was Vaguely Similar To A Minor Aspect Of A Broader Series."

Sorry, a second season is a go, and no lawsuit is going to stop it. It doesn't even look like the tardigrade will have another appearance anyway.
