Discovery Renewed for Season 2

Interesting...

I sure as fuck hope they don't make that mistake again. Fans have shit ideas about where franchises should head....and I DO recognize that a lot of online complaining happens because of this belief that someone will hear them and make the show more to their liking.

I say again- if someone is here reading:

1. Get your ass back to work.
2. Don't listen to all the morons online who have 1001 fanwank ideas about what makes Star Trek special. :barf:

Your point is well taken, and proof that it would be ridiculous. Technobabble to get around technobabble. BOOORRRIIINNNNGGG.

In most cases, the basic properties of the shields aren't important enough to be stated in dialogue. If they just call the shields "shields" and the torpedoes "torpedoes," there isn't a problem. Throw in a screen that does say the shields are transphasic or whatever, and most of the people who care about that will be satisfied.

Agreed. And in no way would it be ridiculous. Like Jesse says, you don't have to make a big deal of it. It is no different than phase cannons and or lasers giving way to phasers, or photon torpedoes going to quantum torpedoes, or cloaks competing against better sensors. Technology, especially military technology, is always in a game of oneupmanship over the previous best.

So much hate on Reddit. I really like Discovery, but it has turned me off the fanbase completely.

I know they ("haters") might consider themselves part of the fanbase, but I don't consider them to be, and I don't think you should either. I can totally understand someone not liking a Trek series for their own reasons, but unending hate for any Star Trek, unreasoning bashing, etc. - those traits should make it clear one is not an actual Trek fan.

I doubt it. I also doubt we'll see any Star Trek related feature films from Paramount while ST: D is in production and streaming.

The LAST thing they want is to oversaturate the media with multiple shows/films again. The days of two TV series airing and a feature film in the works for release are LONG gone.

I think there still is a chance for a 4th Paramount movie. That is a pretty big franchise, for them. One more Kelvin Timeline movie should be doable.

As for multiple TV shows + movies simultaneously, I think we only have to look to Marvel and DC to see that is can be done, though I wouldn't call either of their franchises prime examples of how to do it right (given the poorer entries in their respective stables and probably few too many shows on the TV front - at some point you can't just churn them out).

On this we are in agreement. If the show has four really good seasons and then signs off I'll consider that a successful run. Seven seasons is VERY long and frankly none of the Trek series should have went that long.

I would pay 10,000 quatloos to have more DS9. The same too for TNG if they had gotten some fresh blood in the writers' room for season 8. And i could definitely have seen more of ENT given its direction for season 4.

I have absolutely no idea what you are trying to say. But it came off as smarmy and I'm sure I'm supposed to feel insulted or something.
I didn't mean it as an insult. I just meant anything is possible with writers who are talented and inspired. Good sci-fi writers. I gave the new Doctor Who as an example. They are staying true to their roots and still come up with great stories.

Because there is a small but VERY vocal group of Trek fans who HATTEEEEE Discovery and shit on it at every opportunity. They also in the next breath praise The Orville for being REAL Star Trek because they are stuck in the past and blinded by nostalgia and pseudo-TNG aesthetics. I think some of them just spite-watch The Orville.

If Orville doesn't get renewed for Season 2 and Discovery does, they'll shit a brick.

Orville doesn't get renewed for season 2?

I'm hoping Orville does get renewed. I think it has an audience. It's not my cup of tea personally, but it's watchable and the more sci fi shows made for TV the better!

I am beyond ecstatic, however, that DISCO got renewed so early. At least I won't be stressing closer to the end of the season. Can just relax and enjoy the story unfolding. :techman:

Y'know...Because REASONS! Didn't you get the memo?

Honestly, I do hope Orville continues on. It is a very good show and there is no reason whatsoever that it cannot coexist alongside Discovery.
Its going to boil down to money and how well the channels other shows are doing.

I hear the Orville is expensive but if the ratings are good or the other shows ratings are bad it will be ok for now.

It seems anyone who isn’t in love with STD has everyone jumping down their throats for daring to criticise it. If you are glad it is being renewed then I’m glad for you. But could I get a feel of what it is exactly you like about it?

Is it the character of Michael Burnham?
The bitching of the crew?
The camera work?
The Star Wars superficiality?
The Klingons?
The evil captain?
The Vulcan intergalactic force communication?

If this series didn’t have Star Trek in the name no one would give it a second glance and the makers know it.

Ummm well first of all, just because you dislike it doesn't mean everyone else shares your view. In fact, looking at the polls, a huge majority of people on this forum like Star Trek Discovery. It really comes down to something called opinion.

And, in polls of the general viewership, a smidge under 60% like it. Still a majority, but "huge" only if you're electing an American President. ;)

Personally, I like:
- Michael: I like her combination of traits, her trying to understand being human after her education, and I just like her.
- Saru: funny, sarcastic, and a coward, though not a useless one like some minor characters - this is inherent to his make up/species, but has also shown forcefulness when needed and looks likely to grow a lot as a character, and a great performance by Doug Jones so far
- Tily: fun and energetic, like a cadet should be, and I don't find her at all annoying like some people do
- Lorca: damaged, not evil, I think he has solid principles that we will come to see even though right now they are hidden by his pragmatism and his pain
- Stamets: even though he was grouchy at first, I immediately liked him and i liked how they showed from the start that he does have a softer, friendlier side that not everyone gets to see - and we have seen more of that side since
- The Discovery: i didn't like the original teaser trailer version, but I think the final version is pretty darn beautiful and the show is doing their best to highlight it with amazing space shots
- The music and theme song: while the theme isn't as strong a Voyager's, it is good and the imagery accompanying it is cool (like Enterprise's was)
- I like the crew interplay (what you term "bitching") - they are not the more perfect TNG type characters and in only the 4 episodes on Discovery we are already seeing them starting to work well together as a team and as friends
- I like the supporting characters we have seen so far: Sarek, Admiral Cornwall, Mudd - they are all well acted and bring either touches of TOS (for Sarek and Mudd) and add to character backstories (for Sarek and Cornwall)
- I like the storytelling so far - liked the 2-hour pilot and have liked the episodes since. I think I would enjoy having it be slightly more episodic while still having serialized bits, but the balance so far has been good and better than I feared
- The Spore drive: despite it being a huge stretch in terms of science, I have liked the concept of the spore drive (the subspace network) and especially the Tardigrade
- While I don't particularly like the Klingon story, what i do like is that (at least for now) it is just a background motivation that propels our main characters actions and interactions. The Discovery is what we really care about, and if the Klingons pop up in a minor way each episode or every other episode to push things along, I am ok with that. I like that there is a strong drive behind the season - Discovery isn't just drifting out there, they have a mission (one that is a little more well defined than just warping around).
- Finally, Georgiou, though we only saw her briefly, I really liked her and am looking forward to seeing more of her via flashback or recording, etc.

Yes, I was mostly referring to this forum where the poster is supposedly getting criticized for not liking Discovery (because of the camera work among other things that can be debated ad nauseum). General polls on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes are suspect anyway, especially when voting is open before 1 episode has even aired and where people can just vote 1 star without watching.

In terms of its overall cultural reach and popularity, Peak Trek was between 1991 and 1995.

A pretty short and distant period, when you think about it.

It was a great time. I was 10yo back then. There was Trek merchandise EVERYWHERE like there is Star Wars stuff today. I could go to my local Walmart and they'd have next gen toys on the shelf. All the toy stores had starship model kits. Ah, nostalgia.

No reason why those days can't come back again. As long as each show has their own showrunners and writers... 52 Star Trek episodes a year is a bit much, no reason why it can't be 26 divided between two TV series.

As for the movies, I doubt Paramount will wait for 5, 6 or 7 years to produce another Star Trek movie...
