Another Gary Mitchell didn't die story, tying in with the second TOS pilot?

Indeed. I've even used the idea myself in the 80s for a FASA Trek RPG scenario.

Until 'To Boldly Go' how many versions of 'the end of the 5 year mission' have had?

There was DC's 1986 Annual 'The Final Voyage': http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Final_Voyage which featuresa return to Talos IV and Koloth

    IDW's Mission's End also attempted a 'final story': http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Mission's_End,_Issue_5

The Lost Years took place straight after, before TMP: http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Lost_Years

Plus I'm sure many fan fiction versions!

I feel however with this, after years of New Voyages and Continues, To Boldly Go is at last the final definitive version. Yes since 1969 there have been hundreds of stories bridging Turnabout Intruder and TMP (and I'm sure there will be for decades to come!), but apart from the three above examples there has never been definitive closure to the 5 Year Mission, at least not on screen.

it will be fascinating, specially comparing with the two comics, how Continues handles the situation.

I have a comic around here somewhere that also covers the end of the five year mission. Part of it has Scotty and Kirk dealing with experimental warp drive tests, another part is about Kirk and Carol, and Kirk making his choice to take the desk job, and Spock saying goodbye. I think it ends with Kirk in a shuttle seeing the Enterprise being taken apart, much as his life feels in that moment. It's a bit of a bittersweet little comic. I actually used to really love it as a kid and always wanted to see a screen adaption of it.

    I found it! :) I went and dug it out. DC's "star-crossed."

Took a couple quick snaps of it. Forgive the low quality, my cellphone is probably eight years out of date by now, and the camera lens has seen better days.

Carol: "Can Jim Kirk be happy seeing one star--The same star--every day?"
Spock: "I shall miss your professional acuity...and your friendship."
McCoy: "...Jim may never be happy anywhere but the bridge of a starship."

Kirk: "They say it's destiny, old girl. Maybe they're right. So when you're ready, i'll be waiting."

Cool :D I don't think To Boldly Go is an adaptation, it's another entirely new version of events!

Is that the last comic in the second DC Trek run?

I wonder what the cast and crew will do now that "Continues" has been discontinued? They've got some really talented and creative people there.

When their sister show were planning a movie era-spinoff I was hoping it would lead to a Continues/Farragut crossover movie

    Alas was not to be!

Just getting the sets built for *any* movie era production would be a HUGE win for *any* of the fan film groups. So much to explore from the time period, and some really interesting retro 80s styles and music could be created for the project. Vic is completely the right age to play Kirk as he gets older, too. Its all wide open. They could put some emphasis on new characters, too, or continue expanding their own larger cast. Imagine if STC had the budget of even ONE episode of Discovery to play with... imagine the greatness that could be accomplished!

I'd say make it so but given the guidelines mabe people are no longer wanting to pursue in such a high manner? But LOOK how good Movie era Vic looks, right here - see with your own eyes:

They did a sneak preview showing at a convention last week, and I asked them if backers would get to see this. All I got was "most likely," but looks like Vic decided everyone sees it at the same time this episode.
