Episode 5-9 titles revealed

Wow. Encounter at Farpoint, The Naked Now, Code Of Honor and the Last Outpost really beat 1-4 of Discovery for you?

Since farpoint was a 2 parter technically we would have just finished the 4th hour or Code of Honor of TNG.... which was cringeworthy at best.

Yeah, they really do. There was something magical in that first season. Learning the characters and the universe. My first new Trek. Of course, nostalgia plays a part in it. But, I simply don't care about any of the characters on Discovery. To me, they've done a terrible job of selling the characters as anything other than chess pieces to move the plot from point A to point B.

Add into that, they are simply going where Star Trek has already been. It has been dull to an extreme level.

True. I thought I was being generous including Last Outpost which is at least mediocre, weird conversations about France and hunchback Ferengi with whips aside. Naked Now was a bad remake of a TOS episode, and Code of Honor was, well, we know what it was. TNG was pretty terrible throughout its first season and for at least half of its second, and yet is remembered very fondly (including by me). Discovery is exciting and engaging from the off, with human characters who resemble real people interacting in believable ways, didn't scuttle its own premise straight away (looking at you, Voyager) and you get the impression the writers didn't just design a crew to fill roles and then think 'now what? Best dust off a TOS script', they designed the ship and crew around the story they wanted to tell. That's the most new thing (for Trek) that Discovery is doing.

So far, he's right apart from TOS. Perhaps you're forgetting some of the previous season ones.

If we were talking only about the first 4 episodes, I would give it to DS9* over DIS, by a hair. Both shows started with significant flaws, but also abundant promise, intriguing premises, strong character concepts -- they're both immediately good shows, with the clear potential to be amazing, if they can work out the kinks.

Of course, DS9 went on to have that serious rough patch for most of the rest of season one. DIS doesn't even have to get any better -- if they just maintain the current level of quality, they will be the best Trek season 1.

*Edited for nerdy clarification: I'm counting "Emissary" as a single episode and including "Babel" in my count of the first 4 DS9's. "Babel" is near unwatchable now, but it intrigued me then, what can I say?

I find myself "enjoying" the first few episodes of DS9 more than I have DIscovery,

I find myself enjoying Discovery more than the first handful of episodes TNG.

So far however, I haven't seen an episode of Discovery that I think is in, even the top 20 of star trek shows as a whole, and I don't think I will.

There are a lot of shows, that are VERY serialized that I for one have a hard time rating highly on their own. I am going to use the Marvel shows as an example, Stellar shows, absolutely stellar, but so serialized. I can't think of any individual episode of any that I think is amazeballs, but I can think of large stints of scenes that I can rank though.

I don't know if Discovery will be more like the Netflix marvel shows, and less like TNG or X -Files and may never deliver an "Inner Light" Everything Discovery will deliver will be too linked.

I simply don't get that feeling from these characters, at all.
I don't think there are any personalities on Discovery I haven't met a version of in real life. They seem like very grounded people with real parallels, who are facing difficult times with a realistic mix of bravery, conflict, snark and gallows humour. TNG characters, on the other hand, seem like archetypes, defined by one or two characteristics or traits - how many times did Yar or Worf suggest/try shooting someone in season 1? Picard changes every episode, Troi is useless, and Data is just there to misunderstand common terms and give over precise estimates, and their interactions seemed very stilted and not at all like real humans. I grew to love TNG, but it took a long ass time to get to a point where it seemed comfortable in its own skin. Discovery seems that way in 'Context is for Kings', to me. It seems like someone put some thought into what they'd do with the new crew they were creating, while most Trek shows seemed to focus heavily on stuff like who fired phasers, who made course corrections, and what everyone's rank was, at the expense of what stories they would tell with this crew. Discovery is the total opposite - I don't know the name, rank, or job of anyone on the ship who isn't tied into the story they're telling. I like the change of pace.

For me, DSC is getting better and better with every episode and I consider the prologue two parter already a strong one. I'd say, nothing on VOY or ENT came even close to making such an impression on me as "The butchers knife does not care for the lambs cry". (Will that be TBKDNCFTLC for further discussions?) Best episode since the last days of DS9. But I like serialised, I like dark and I don't cut my arm for every (suspected) canon violation. But I see the things, that doesn't seem to fit and I understand, why someone might have problems with them. But I myself? I am just one happy trekkie! :bolian::angel::beer:

I enjoyed the first seasons of TNG and Enterprise a heck of a lot more than Discovery, thus far.

You know, if I had a time machine at the moment, I wouldn't use it to go kill Hitler, i'd use it to go back and see if your feelings towards the first season of TNG are true.

Then I'd go ride a T.rex
