Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

The Orville is the celebration of the golden age of sci-fi. It's not Seth McFarlane's attempt to compete with Trek, it's his love letter to Star Trek. Discovery is Star Trek responding to a new TV age. None of the Star Trek series hit the ground running so it's unfair to expect Discovery to and it's unfair to compare it to The Orville which gets to play with Star Treks clothes but doesn't have to carry it's baggage.

I don't think Seth Macfarlane is the type of guy who would be happy by the type of factionalism that segments of both fanbases are creating. By all means have preferences, but there is no need for either side to be antagonistic and rip the shows to shreds. It's pervading most of the threads in this forum and It's getting tiresome.

Regardless, even in the video, the commentator suggests there's not much to worry about.

I agree with you on The Orville, but my willingness to give Trek three years to sort itself out goes way, way down when they're demanding I pay by the month.

I pay $10.99 plus tax (US) per month for the commercial free plan. So far, it definitely hasn't been worth it. There's nothing there except Discovery.

Netflix has more stuff available like Riverdale, I’m on the ultra HD plan so I have no issues watching it on a big screen TV.

I use it also for Elementary, the original Mission: Impossible and Twilight Zone, as well as all the Trek series. I know some of this is on Netflix, but sometimes they don't carry all episodes of a series on Netflix.

The Twilight Zone was missing episodes on All-Access the last time I checked.

That's a choice. I agree CBSAA doesn't have much there, but as much as I hate commercials, I'll muddle through a few of them if I have to. I'm not going to pay the extra for no commercials on ONE show. Now, our Hulu account, where we do watch a lot? Now that my wife and I are both gainfully employed, we will pay the extra for no commercials there.

That's not too bad cost wise, but it's annoying if you don't want to watch anything else on that particular service

Yeah netflix can be annoying like that. I'd been waiting for Brooklyn Nine Nine Season 4 for ages and ended up having to buy it on xbox live. That was about 3 months ago and they still only have seasons 1 - 3. Thank goodness season 5 is popping up on youtube.

Then don't subscribe! From your posts, it feels like you've already made the decision you're not going to like Discovery, which is absolutely fine. But if its that big of a deal, you can always press the big red cancel button! (Or whatever color the button is. If there is a button.)

this is a versus society. I remember many of the gazillion times Trek vs Wars would come up, and I would take some position along the lines of "both" and trek and wars fans would go nuts

that's calmed down a bit, and I think the orville vs discovery conversations are more tame, certainly better than discussing American politics but still,

Um, someone asked what we were paying for it here in the US. No one is making a big deal out of it. The service overall simply isn't worth the money.

Even if I loved Discovery, based on what other services (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime) offer, CBS All-Access would still be lacking. $11.55 a month isn't a lot of money, but if I had economic problems and I had to ditch a streaming service, the first one to go would be All-Access.

I'd do it in tiers, $6 is how much I pay, if the budget started to get tight, I would keep this service until discovery was done, and pick up another one that had other shows, when I got sick of that I'd move onto another one.

Easy choice for me.
