Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

Whether or not they were "better" is a matter of opinion. I do not think they were "better", mainly because I want original material.

Then you must not like Discovery. Two cups of "Equinox", a spoonful of "Threshold", a pinch of "The Devil in the Dark", add some Deep Space Nine sauce and sprinkle vigorously some Battlestar Galactica (2004) characters on top.

Originality is not a Discovery strong point.

Originality was also not a strong point of TNG when they did the Naked Time again in their first season or Voyager when they took TNG's matter of perspective and turned into the first season episode Ex Post Facto.

But some folks are dinging The Orville for not being original. While I wish it was better executed, I have no issue with Discovery's "originality".

The only way they could win is to claim that the Orville is a parody but Seth Mscfarlan has stated that the show isn't a parody. CBS is probably waiting to see if the Orville has legs before it acts.

Nonsense. They would have sued FOX already, if they thought their copyright was hurt. Not just because of The Orville, but also to send out a message to everyone else who wants to use their property without permission. As this didn't happen they obviously think The Orville is not similar enough to Star Trek to win a court case.

I sure hope that they don't cancel the Orville for some legal technically, it's the only show that's at least trying to satisfy that StarTrek void.

Oh, for fuck's sake... after 700+ adventures, the last thing I’m going to bitch and moan about is originality. Like The Simpsons and Law & Order, Star Trek has done everything. I don’t judge Discovery OR Orville or any other sci-fi space-based series on that.

Regardless, there are not enough substantial similarities between Trek and Orville for CBS to do anything. I’m sure Orville’s studio (Fox?) looked very hard at this. I would not be surprised as a professional courtesy, CBS was reached out to.

The ultimate difference between Orville and Axanar is that Axanar was to be blatantly set in the Trek universe. Orville, while having the basic of fleeting similarities to Trek, takes place in its own universe.

shoot, there arent even enough similarities to make the versus discussion interesting.

OMG this. Almost everything has been done before in Trek. If it hasn't been done before in Trek then another show did it. Nothing is new and original.

i, come here because im pedantic and know im always right and must let everyone on the internet know this.

its a sickness really.
Its always made me laugh really, in every discussion someone starts being all defensive and hostile and the whole thread goes down the toilet, it happens so fast as well.

What makes it worse is that some seem to think that if they win the argument it will actually have an effect on reality, like saving their preferred show at the expense of their opponents etc etc.

Even though it doesn't work that way and never has.

Still its hilarious to watch.

This thread is a case in point, I myself am enjoying both shows at the moment, although the first two episode's of Discovery were hard work to watch.

Ok, so you admit they were ripoffs.

They cheated.
No, I don't admit they are "ripoffs" any more than TOS was a rip off of Forbidden Planet, which ripped of the Tempest. Or perhaps First Contact which ripped of TWOK which ripped of King Lear and Moby Dick, among other things.

I want original material too, but Star Trek hasn't delivered on that.
I'll strongly disagree on better done. the caliber of acting and writing as a whole was better in TNG.

about a girl specifically, one of those "lawyer" type episodes, The logic was so god awful faulty in Orville, once again the highlights were the comedic moments, which where funny as hell.

The most recent episode i'm assuming is to be the "matter of time" equivalent,

no way on gods green earth that episode was better done
Agree to disagree.
And yet here we are in a "Orville vs. Discovery" thread.
Wasn't aware this was a legal thread. Should I get my lawyer?

Yes.

They are losing viewers like crazy, I wouldn’t believe it was so bad if I didn’t see the stats from that video.

Yet is the FOX Network's third highest rated show behind Empire and The Simpsons.

True. However, I imagine there's a lot more overhead on Orville than Empire and The Simpsons. It needs to remain profitable otherwise either the series will be cancelled or have extreme budget cuts for season two. Can you imagine if it becomes Orville 1980? :p
