Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

It's funny when a show about starship that the wall made with wood and carpet to be considered as a sci-fi. The Orville is not a sci-fi. It's a parody with comedy that situated in Space. You can call it fantasy, but actually, it's more of a drama comedy with some action element. So the creator ignore sci-fi elements because they're not important to the story, and they're right about it, and the sci-fi element is not important for "The Orville".

If you say that The Orville is more Star Trek TNG than Discovery, then yes it is. Because it is a Star Trek TNG parody. While ST Discovery is ST Discovery. It's not ST TNG. Just look at the 2nd episode of Orville. Isn't it the rip off of the old episode of "The Cage" from the ST TOS Pilot? And look at all those elements, like holodeck, etc. They just copy everything that the TNG had just for the sake of "The Orville" is the "ST TNG" parody.

So, it's okay to like The Orville than ST Discovery if you're ST TNG fans. Just for the sake of nostalgia, The Orville is a good choice for Star Trek fans to watch. But don't expect to see it in any serious way of thought. Because The Orville is not a serious show that you want to expect from a Star Trek show. It's not created to be serious to begin with.

So if you want to compare "The Orville" and "Discovery", then you can't. Because they are not apple to apple. ST Discovery is the evolution of Star Trek as a show. They bring the name of Star Trek and they aim for Star Trek to gain new fans from the 21st Century audiences. While The Orville is basically a drama comedy and a ST TNG parody.

Note : To be honest, if you want to say that The Orville as the "BEST" Star Trek parody out there, I beg to pardon that I disagree with you. Because for me, the best Star Trek parody that I ever know was actually the old Sierra PC-game called "Space Quest V". Roger Wilco was the best ST Parody Hero that I ever know.

The Orville is not a sci-fi.

The Orville is every bit as much sci-fi as Star Trek is.

Because The Orville is not a serious show that you want to expect from a Star Trek show. It's not created to be serious to begin with.

Thank fucking God! So tired of Trek treating itself as it is somehow important in the grand scheme of things. These folks run around in pajamas, traveling at ludicrous speeds and tackling things that were likely created while Roddenberry was smoking dope.

Nope. The Orville is not a sci-fi. Even with those Holodeck, food replicator, FTL drive, etc, they're not sci-fi. Because they're all just a rip off from Star Trek TNG. There is nothing new about those fancy stuffs in it. So you can call The Orville as a Space Fantasy, but not a sci-fi. The Orville fancy tech stuff just at similar level as the Japanese RPG game called Star Ocean.

While The expanse and ST Discovery can be considered as Sci-Fi. Because both of them have the vision on how the future looks like. Star Trek TNG can be considered as Sci-Fi too. But only when they were aired in '80. Because ST TNG had the vision of how the future look like (at the time it was made long time ago). But the Orville has not.

Orville IS just as much science fiction as any Star Trek series , I just find that it doesn't take itself too seriously.
(TOS often played fast and loose with comedic elements throughout the first and second seasons) I see it as "Trek Lite"
and enjoy it as a guilty pleasure..besides, it's FUN to watch..not a chore in any way...

The Orville is not a sci-fi.

The Orville
is every bit as much sci-fi as Star Trek is. You realize Star Trek lifted a lot of stuff from other science fiction? Originality isn't some kind of litmus test for sci-fi. If it was? Star Trek also wouldn't be considered sci-fi.

Science Fiction is a broad term. Even something as old as the tale of Gilgamesh can be called scifi if you consider the time period in which it was written, Frankenstein is often called the first scifi novel. The Orville is scifi by any definition.

Discovery
has no vision that wasn't already written in the 1960's.

They have. Although it's not original. At least we have witness them in other show like the Expanse and other Space Sci-Fi. But you can see that the space in ST Discovery is more a ship in the space than the Orville, or older ST series out there (ST TNG, TOS). They have a new vision on how the Space look like (which is way different than the older Star Trek), and it's more believe-able in the eyes of 21st Century Audience. Don't you think that it require a new vision and ideas in regard of sci-fi to make it look like in ST Discovery show? So it's Sci-Fi.

While the Orville is not. They just copy everything that ST TNG (which is a '80 space show) and ignore the new vision of Space that the 21st century Audience aware of. So they're space fantasy.

So... *finger wag* "Originality" is all that matters and not actually telling good stories.

If it's got a space ship in it, it's science fiction. If faeries are in it, it's fantasy. If your president is orange it's horror.

This shit's easy.

I agree with your first post. That you can call even The Tale of Gilgamesh as scifi if you consider the time period in which it was written. So ST TNG was sci-fi at the time it was written (in '80). But today they are just fantasy. So the Orville is a space fantasy. Because they don't carried today Sci-Fi standard of space Sci-Fi in their show. They brought the '80 era of sci-fi in their show, and just that. They don't even care about a new approach of space sci-fi that has been showed in another new space sci-fi like the Expanse, etc. It's simple as that.

The Orville is science fiction. It's not about technology, but people reacting to that technology and the changes it brings. Now, you can have hard sci-fi and soft sci-fi, but the Orville is still sci-fi.

The Orville is more interesting and much more lively as a science fiction show than Trek has been for decades.

But then, so are shows like Westworld and Farscape, which have had to earn their audiences as well. Star Trek just flashes its badge and expects free donuts.
