Let's talk about the elephant in the room, this series violates Roddenberry's vision big time

Assuming the fungus space travel and any other technological advancements shown during STD have to fail in order for canon to be maintained, Lorca and the Discovery crew will have to be defeated. My money's on Burnham being turned into some sort of evil destroying messiah / female black Jesus character as was done to David Tennant's Doctor by Russell T Davies. It's so obvious, and it will massively offend Christian white middle America, something which STD has been explicitly written to do.

Even the show doesn't manage to do that, the cast are already managing it in spades.

Speaking as White Christian middle America, I'm reminded of Gene Roddenberry's belief WHO WATCHES THE WATCHERS would be highly controversial and shocking to America when it turns out most Christians actually agree you shouldn't impersonate a god. Given so many review sites also see the Klingons coming off as ISIS and people just CONFUSED by the man children who think it's somehow more PC than regular Trek--I think the show will do fine.

I do foresee Discovery's first season ending with Lorca dead and Burnham as Captain, though.

I guess I'm on board!

You want to hear some crazy ****ing complaints about the show? Watch this guy's review of Discovery where he thinks it's all about Trump's America. Warning - Bad Language.

Yep, that's a bunch of bullshit, particularly for downplaying the elements of black identity in DS9 and feminism in Voyager. Indeed, I don't see anything in Discovery that really touches those shows.

All these characters "failed" that test. Like Sisko and Archer, that fall was not as important as their efforts to rise back up. That's Roddenberry's vision - as Kirk said, "We're barbarians, but we can choose not to kill today". These people are still flawed, but they aren't going to let one lapse define them. And from her speech to Lorca at the end of ep1x03, neither is Burnham.
Point is not that character's cannot fail, it is whether their questionable acts are depicted in good light and ultimately justified. Sisko's murderous conspiracy and Archer's piracy went unpunished, and apart some brief man pain in the case of Sisko, these deeds did not seem to much bother them on the long run. Jury is still out for Burnham, but it certainly is a good sign that she seems to realise that she fucked up.

I've seen enough of that guy's work before (And by "enough," I mean about five minutes.) to know that whatever he has to say is probably just over-simplified fallacious bullshit without actually having to watch.

I watched the whole thing to see if he had anything to say about the actual show.

No, he didn't.

Eh, that's a gross oversimplification. Yes, Sisko succeeded in a black ops plan which actually murdered a man to get the Romulans to attack the Dominion but the stories are full of Downer Endings. I recall someone said how awesome it was for Ep. 3 of the Orville to have a downer ending and that never happened on Star Trek.

I was like, "Kirk couldn't get the black and white people to stop killing the white and black people."

Okay. So against my better judgment. I did open then video. I moved the slider to a random time and landed on the part where he equates white nationalists to Black Lives Matter.

And, no, I didn't stick around long enough to see how the fuck that connects to Star Trek.

The bullet points are:

* The Klingons are Trump supporters
* T'Kuvma is Trump
* Remain Klingon is "Make America Great Again."
* Her being named Michael is meant to be some huge anti-man agenda
* The womenz have taken over Star Trek
* The POC have taken over Star Trek (He just brushes off Isaacs being Captain)
* Sisko and Janeway weren't "in your face about it" (what is it?)

And...honestly, it gets more insane from there.

* The Klingons are Trump supporters
Kinda. They're intolerant nationalists that are terrified of change.

* T'Kuvma is Trump
Kinda, but he is too competent and has better grammar and hairdo.

* Remain Klingon is "Make America Great Again."
Yeah, it kinda is.

* Her being named Michael is meant to be some huge anti-man agenda
No.

* The womenz have taken over Star Trek
Unfortunately no. I'm still bummed that this advertised female Captain with female XO thing lasted just for two episodes.

* The POC have taken over Star Trek (He just brushes off Isaacs being Captain)
Again, unfortunately no.

I thought in general that Roddenberry's vision was that humans would become more mature and less combative with each other....in general.

That doesn't mean they don't have objectionable individual personality traits.

Heck, it was Roddenberry who gave us rogue Starfleet captain Ron Tracy and deranged ex-girlfriend Janice Lester, in "The Omega Glory" and "Turnabout Intruder," respectively. Both scripted by Roddenberry himself.
