Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

The Orville was great, good episode. It was very funny.

But yeah, it's funny. Sure it's copying trek but in true MacFarlane fashion, only enough to make it funny. It really just reminds me of TNG with comedy. It certainly doesn't have as serious a tone though so, I think that serious tone is more important to being trek than simply looking like TNG.

That being said, the serious tone without the science, fiction, and handling of political and moral quandaries is useless so, who knows.

Apologies if this has come up in the past 36 pages but, I don't think The Orville hasn't aired outside the US and Discovery is now worldwide.

I don't see the competition.
It is just a matter of time until The Orville will be aired in other countries, too.

What cannot be understated is that comedy often does not translate well to other languages. As someone who is fluent in Italian and English it usually does not work, and having spoken to people fluent in other languages it's the same situation. Is it impossible? No , but translation is complicated and costly to get right. I don't think it's worth it for fox to bother. If it's succesful it will be in the states.

Europe speaks English as a secondary language, and there are certain types of humour that do not require language...hence the existence of cinema, silent films has great success with comedy.
The comedy I have seen in part One of the Orville (A friend gave me a copy. I do t ask where he got it, I stay away from the shady side of the net these days.) will translate fine, and possibly do even better over here...we tend to laugh at sex more than run and hide. The opening blue goo scene and the loosening the pickles scene will go down well I suspect.

Best way to know honestly is how well does family guy do in Europe?

Orville is nothing like Family Guy. But it does pretty well in my experience. It’s shifted channel...probably does a little better than South Park these days here in the UK. But I would place Orville more in the realm of Red Dwarf or Coupling, in fact, it seems to be more in the vain of UK comedy Dramas than US ones (I.e it’s almost too serious to actually be a sit com, and doesn’t have a laugh track. Red Dwarf does, but has a live studio audience for that.)
I think it will do well in both the European markets I have experience of, and I can also see it doing well in Germany, where Trek is very very popular, and genre TV has always slanted towards the sexy and goofy. (Lexx for example) No one is pretty enough in it for French TV though xD

All kinds of US comedy series air in other countries and a lot of them are successful. Not all series in every country of course, but you can say the same about serious series. And dubbing might cost something, but it is still much cheaper for a channel than producing a series on their own. FOX is not dubbing themselves or if they are, then the foreign channel will have to pay extra. And there are of course a lot of countries which only use subtitles.

It is likely quite successful. Unpopular series generally don't have Wikipedia sites in so many different languages.

Unfortunately, Star Trek is starting to take itself way to seriously with its tone, and missing the "adventure" part of the optimism and the grand speeches.

Are you talking about Enterprise, and the Klingy virus thing? Trek fans demanded that?

It's a more like an overzealous(but great and awesome) EP/Showrunner was looking for fun or interesting TOS tie-ins to write about. I've never heard of anyone demanding explanations.

I see no problem explaining the Quch'ha using the Augment virus and "cure". A bigger problem is none have seen in DSC, nor the HemQuch

I don’t understand the need to make this a competition. There is room for both. There is room to enjoy both. There are a lot of fans here who continue to post shit trying to rile up the other side. And it’s getting tiring. At the moment, both shows are going to survive. Live and let live.

I love this quote from an article:
So, which show is “more like” Star Trek? I would venture to say they both are. While The Orville is giving us the “adventure of the week in space” (while also exploring moral and ethical dilemmas) that Star Trek fans love and crave so much, Discovery is giving us the “cinematic adventure in space” that we love from the films. What show should Trek fans be watching? Why not have the best of both worlds and watch The Orville AND Star Trek: Discovery?

After two episodes of Discovery and four of Orville... I'm enjoying The Orville a bucket lot more. It's TNG, but with the B-team. They're not all the best and brightest the Union has to offer, they're not flying its flagship heavy cruiser. They're quirky and interesting, they're flawed but not utterly horrible people. Except for Isaac. Isaac is totes amaze.

"About a Girl" and "If the Stars Should Appear" are honestly good science fiction, better than what Discovery has served up so far.

My two credits.

It's simple...because people are a-holes and want conflict.

I see no relationship between the two series whatsoever. One is baseball and the other is football...and we're trying to compare which team would beat the other in a lacrosse game.

Stupid.
