THE ORVILLE - S1, E4: "IF THE STARS SHOULD APPEAR"...

Best episode yet. The story and humor mixed a little bit better, even if they are sometime going for low brow humor. Finally a new Trek/Stargate/DrWho series!! Nice to see Pigeon in there! :)

This episode was great. I loved that the prime directive was not even a thought but the end was a great feel good moment. Also the jokes work for me. Loved the friends reference and the Kelly torture scenes were funny. I could do if youfait and the Doctor never talked to each other again but I can see that as a running gag.

This show is a winner.

As last week's show had a TNG thing going for it, I thought this one had more of a Voyager vibe. That Hemalak (?) had Voyager baddie of the week written all over him.

I don't know who that is. Aside from that's probably the actor who voices him.

For the world is hollow and I have touched the sky while wondering who watches the watchers and making a number of dick jokes. I loved it when John blew up the Krill ship and he got real excited. That was better than Data pumping his fist when the Duras sisters were blown up or whatever was blown up. I'm fuzzy on that bit right now..

So do they have universal translators?

This episode takes place before Bortus lays an egg?

Friends TV series joke was kind of lame.

WTF, a Persian guy joke?

Directed by Trek veteran James Conway.

Lamar dude is funny

Yes, Norm Macdonald is the actor doing the voice. Best known for his stint on SNL doing the news.
Yaphet Kotto is also an actor. Among his many roles, he was on Homicide : Life on The Streets for it's entire run and was the Bond villain in Live & Let Die.

.

No the baby is in what looked like a bassinet at the foot of their bed. They also mention him during their discussion.

I liked the Dick jokes mainly because it was a punchline from one part of the episode to half way through. When Issac said that Ed meant it as a compliment, I cracked up.

Maybe I just like this kind of humor.

I liked it. At least there is one Trek-like show on TV in 2017. If only we had another! ;-) I guess we will have to wait for an Orville spin off show.

Seeing Liam Neeson was great and I'm glad there was no silly discussion about whether we should let millions of people crash into a star and be vaporized because we don't want to interfere with their culture. I don't mind the modern pop references. They are a little overdone, but it's possible that people in the 1600s would be surprised to know that people 400 years in the future still know who "Romeo and Juliet" are. It's not as ridiculous as it might seem that some parts of our culture would still be cultural reference points in the 25th century, even things we might be surprised about.

Real workplace have humor, including dick jokes. Again, a little overdone sometimes, but humor can make it more realistic, not less. Calling the big bad a dick made sense. Real people in the real world would use words like ahole and dick to describe that guy. Including among serious professional people.

That "dick joke" worked for me, it was along the lines of when Data would misunderstand some human slang or terminology. (Though no one corrected Issac when he took being called a "dick" as complement as it has little, if anything, to do with biology when used as an insult.) The "dick joke" that didn't work for me, for example, was in the previous episode when the blob-guy made a gelatinous phallus to Doctor Sherry Palmer to try and woo her.

Interesting guest stars: Robert Knepper as the colony leader (known from Prison Break as T-Bag, making it hard for me to ever take the guy as anything but a creep, he played that part so well) and James Morrison (Bill Buchanan from 24) as the leader of the defectors.

I find it hard to believe no guy, so far, on the ship has been willing to have a girlfriend stronger than them considering how spunky and cute Alara is. I mean, come on, some guys on the ship have to like it rough!

Nice episode, very TOS-y, drawing from

TOS - "For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky"
"Nightfall" by Isaac Asimov

with some shout-outs to Star Trek: The Motion Picture and hints of "The Return of the Archons." My biggest problem was only that they injected Grayson with the antidote without scanning it first.

Were they trying to invoke the "Mayberry set" in the town square?
Dural/Landru?
I got that vibe, too.

Great episode! I really enjoyed the scifi concepts presented in the episode. It definitely felt like what a TOS episode would be like if it were made today. And maybe that is the perfect way of describing The Orville. It is TOS made with 2017 visuals and special effects.

It appears Seth McFarland is going to undermine the Bechdel test by having his characters, male and female, talk about relationships all the time.

I really enjoyed this episode. It felt so much like a STAR TREK episode. It has been a true joy to watch each episode so far. I have missed this kind of fun space adventure series.
