This was the best episode of Star Trek I've seen in almost 20 years, and it wasn't even an episode of Star Trek.
The humor, anachronisms, and present-day references still aren't always working and landing for me. They often just feel out of place (I doubt "Friends" will be much remembered in 400 years) or forced. But through it all the story and "feel" of the show is most working as the kind of Trek I enjoy. The story here was good and, in fact, I've sort-of worked on a similar story in a Trek Fan-Fic I was doing. (The crew encounters a generational ship that has malfunctioned, the inhabitants of it unaware of their circumstances.)
So, got to say, this show is mostly working for me and feels more like "Trek" to me than "Discovery."

That was a lot of fun. Kind of got the feel of Kirk, Spock and McCoy going through the alien habitat/city and bluffing their way through i.e. Piece of the action and other such episodes. Great Star Trek without it being Star Trek. And Charlize Theron guest stars next week! Let's go!
I've got a working theory about that. I think in the Orville universe reboots and remakes are very popular. So any time they reference 20th Century media they are actually referring to a remake made in their time, in fact it might be the third or fourth "Friends" TV series. We know how Hollywood likes ideas with a known track record, no reason to think that trend won't continue into the future. Think about how many version of Sherlock Holmes there have been.
For me, the characterization has been strong in this series. I am hoping that in time I could say the same about Discovery.
It's clear to me that the main cast has moved past their awkwardness and are friends. I am now invested in this show and I hope they can succeed and get more than one season.

I was very concerned about Alara but I knew she'd be okay.
The way Kelly looked at Ed after she got the antidote, has me thinking that those two aren't "over" yet.

A very minor but simple thing they did was leave behind a message buoy when the ship had to leave. How many times has Trek left behind a landing party with no indication as to where they went? It wouldn't have affected the story at all if they just left without a message, but I'm really liking the attention to small details like this!
Also, wasn't the guy playing the older friendly alien one of the main characters on Space Above and Beyond?

It'd be great at some point if they go to get the Doctor and Yaphit is seen leaving her quarters.

Anyhow. Yup. Best episode yet. They seem to be smoothing over the balance of humor/action/drama a bit better here. It still needs time. Some of it hits. Some doesn't, but none of it stopped this from being a really fun & interesting viewing. Robert Knepper as the bad guy was perfect, & Neeson's cameo was just icing on the cake. Next week's teaser with Charlize Theron just adds more to like. If he manages more cameos like this, I can see this doing well
I think the only down side to tonight's episode was that with all the more frequency & timing of commercial breaks, it makes it a little tougher to run a Star Trek type story. When you add in that they are also trying to add humor, it means they have to sacrifice a lot of substance to what was a pretty interesting story (Which got very trimmed down) compared to an actual episode of TNG or TOS. It's like they took the essence of a Trek story, & shot it out of a cannon, instead of roasting it over a spit, the way TNG might
But in a way, that might not hurt the show, because the modern attention span of an average viewer has changed since then too. This format might be better suited to today
