If There is a Second Season, We May Wait a While...

So it'll be like Mad Men, when we had no idea when or if the next season would start, and if it would even be a whole season or not.

Yeah, you'd almost think it was a Cable/Premium series like say "Westworld" or "Game of Thrones"...oh, wait... ;)

Year long breaks are pretty common for streaming shows. At least Discovery is dished out weekly so if it does come out early 2019, it could just be a 9 or 10 month wait between seasons.

There will be 15.5 months in between the two seasons of Stranger Things on Netflix. The most recent seasons of House of Cards were 15 months apart, after previously being a year apart.

Outside of The CW DC shows and now The Orville, everything I watch is from the '70s through '90s. Discovery is the first cable/premium/streaming show I (intend to) watch(ed) more than a few episodes of, so I didn't realize that a lengthy break between seasons for those type of shows was normal. Interesting.

There won't be a Trek 4. Beyond bombed too heavily.

I'm fine with Discovery being delayed. Gives them time to rework the show if future episodes aren't received well.
ST: Beyond unperformed. Now, ST: Nemesis<--- That bombed heavily (Got beat by the film "Maid in Manhattan" its opening weekend.)

However CBS and Paramount work together in that while there is a TV version running, Paramount won't do a Star Trek film, so if there is a Star Trek XIV - it won't be announced until ST: D has finished its run, however long said run is. Why? they don't want Star Trek competing with itself going forward.

One of the actors commented on After Trek, that they would begin filming episode 15 this week. Post production takes weeks-months after live action is completed. Let's guesstimate a total 10 months from start to finish. And that doesn't include the pre production script writing/season story breaking. With production having begun back in late January, a 2019 return shouldn't be considered egregiously long..

Actually it a very new paradigm for Star Trek (to have principal photography for an entire season completed and 10 episodes fully through Post production and ready to air. With TOS, TNG and the other shows sometimes it was a real race to meet a new episode airdate deadline.

Given the result, which I enjoyed quite a bit so far - it neat to see the production staff being given the time to tell the story they want to tell, in the way they want to tell it (for better or worse - but for me so far it's 'better') ;)

I have no issues waiting a year to 18 months if the result is good. Hell, they pushed this first season of ST: D back 9 months to give the production team time, and it worked out quite well.

Well there is this rumor of a Khan miniseries (6 episodes) that, conceivably, could air in 2018 as a "tide me over" between Discovery seasons. I think that would be an awesome plan, sort of like Star Wars is doing, with main seasons on alternating years, and unrelated miniseries' in between.

What if I told you that Discovery may or may not be the only Star Trek series on CBSAA and they might alternate during the other's downtime between seasons? ;)

Not sure how happy I would be with yet another Star Trek show on the air?

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Star Trek: Discovery has only just begun airing but already there is talk of a second season. In an interview with The...

I hope Fuller comes back for the second season.

Also it seems like they are taking the HBO approach to the series, giving producers plenty of time to plan and produce their show. Westworld took 2017 off and comes back in 18, Game of Thrones next season may happen in 2019 (same with Discovery?). Curb Your Enthusiasm took even a longer break.

So far the show only has an audience score of 65%, so if it does get a second season it's going to take one hell of a budget hit.

Audience score via which platform? Most of them are probably just people rating it low over the fact that it's a CBS All Access show.

Given tnat the money CBS/CBS Studios/CBS All Access invested in producing season one, has already been made back via the sale of the series to Netflix's International divisions, making it profitable before production even started, there is no reason to assume that the budget moving forward will be threatened.

Enhance your calm John Spartan, and enjoy some chicken chaloopas from Taco Bell. ;)

Waiting until 2019 for season 2 is nothing in these days of long waits for new seasons of shows. I would rather they take their time and do it right rather than rush to get the show on in 2018.

That's nice, has the money Netflix invested been made back?

Because if not guess what's happening?

The score is that low for 2 reasons...

1. A few Axanar and Orville fanboy groups were sent there from FB en masse to downvote the score.

2. Even people who aren't in the former camp probably gave it a bad score because they are pissed at CBS over CBSAA.

No its not. The show, while maybe not my cup of Trek tea, will be fine. There are lots of people that seem to love the type of stories they are doing.
