That's likely not what Vger23 is referencing. There have been at least a couple of interviews over the past month or two in which the producers talk about the Federation-Klingon War being very much a first-season thing.
It's working just fine for Marvel with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Fists of Irony. S3 of Daredevil won't be around until next year, don't even get me started on how long we've been waiting for JJ's second season!
But, I suppose The Defenders kind of kept the momentum and consciousness of the characters circulating to maintain interest. At the same time, Doctor Who has had a few gap years and half-years since 2005 and we're onto our fifth Doctor for this generation in 2018.

There will definitely be another Star Trek movie from Paramount. What form it takes is anyone's guess, but they're already working on Terminator VI after the last one atomic bombed and the one before that underperformed so badly it never got the intended direct sequels. There won't be a Trek 4. Beyond bombed too heavily.
And maybe even 2020, if Paramount do another movie for 2019.Waiting a year isn't that bad, plenty of shows make us wait a year between seasons.
Of course I fully expect early 2019 to become mid 2019.

But it is also a valid comparison with a cheap bottle show like Orange is the New Black, or the small cast and contemporary setting of Jessica Jones. In both cases, there was a year+ wait after season 1. It's quite common in streaming land, and Discovery actually softens the blow by releasing week-by-week. Fans of House of Cards binge watch one day a year. This is season one, for pete's sake. I really don't think a year+ gap before the second season is helpful (see dodge's comments re: momentum). Also, I don't think it's reasonable to compare to Game Of Thrones, given GoT's increasing scale of production in its final seasons.
I wonder if Discovery will be on ITunes after the season ends. Now that I have Apple TV, I can see myself adding the show to my digital collection, if it improves.
