If There is a Second Season, We May Wait a While...

That's nice, has the money Netflix invested been made back?

Because if not guess what's happening?
Umm Les Moonves has straight up said that discovery profitable BEFORE day one. And if anyone dares (bless you) to go into comment sections such as YouTube etc that aren't trek centric their are two invariable comments that happen ALL the time. The "I'm not a trekkie at all, never seen star trek before. I like this!!" And "this is trash, this is not trek". Now you see that big fancy certified fresh next to that audience score? Yeah, that MATTERS BIG TIME to people. So much so that Hollywood has straight up said that people putting so much emphasis on rotten tomatoes damages them because bad scores drive people away. Completely anecdotal so take with grain of salt, but literally everyone In my age group I know (20-30) uses rotten tomatoes and to a lesser extent metacritic to determine what they watch and where they spend their money. No one is a bigger dark tower fan than myself, moment I saw that score I won't touch it. Kingsman? One of my favourite movies in YEARS!! 50% for sequel, ehhhh I might watch it in theater or wait to rent. In the modern day where time is at such a premium we have tools to help us determine how to spend our time. Now for something less anecdotal, pull a random super popular "prestige tv" show out of your mind and look up it's score. You will notice there is a direct correlation between score, quality and popularity. We are at a tipping point people. Theres going to be new star trek fans and the old ones. The old ones can go to the Orville if they wish, I won't judge.

:shifty: You are not enhancing your calm, John Spartan...:p
When selling a car, the dealership worries not about how you got rich, only that your checks don't bounce. 105 million subscribers worldwide can buy a whole lotta cars. :adore:

At least half the time, if not more, what rotten tomatoes or any other website says, is not how I feel. I never use stuff like that in determining what I will watch. I mean, just look at us here, we don't all agree to anything other than the show has "Star Trek" in it's title.

Can't say I'm a fan of staggering something that I want to.. but am yet to become.. 'invested' in. Here in Australia Netflix is showing the first 8 episodes between Sep 25 and Nov 6. The rest will resume Jan 28 2018. So another year for Season 2 I guess is kind of not unusual, but it is going to have to capture its audience. Bring on the free re-runs.

No he didn't, he said CBS was in the black not that Discovery was profitable.

Yes and no, it's a review agarator. So it takes a whole bunch of opinions and puts them in a simple format.not like I agree always, hated district 9 but it's highly rated. Sometimes it even sets your expectations properly. Like I saw 20% for the Orville and figured it couldn't be that bad. I was wrong *shudders*

Oh really?
"As a result, ‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ our new series, is profitable – and we haven’t even begun production"- directly from Les Moonves during an EARNINGS call.

And the link for your pleasure.

You were saying? ......
That I am right?

Maybe you should actually research the subject instead of parroting pre-prepared soundbite articles that have very little connection to reality. See the fact is that Netflix paid for a significant part of the production costs, and if Netflix doesn't make that money back. Well they will withdraw further funding which means you can say bye bye to the extreme budget.

Yeah, but you're discounting the fact that All-Access is nearing four million subscribers. A total CBS wasn't expecting to hit until 2020. Star Trek is at least partially responsible for that growth. They add another couple million between now and 2020, and that pays for Discovery and then some.

You know much of that budget is expenses they won't have again, yes? Uniforms, props, bridges etc. A bridge which is modular by the way, because they probably thought of that. Who said it needs an extreme budget to be good? By the way you should know that Netflix paid for it specifically for overseas purposes. They are using it to grow overseas. Netflix has a history of investing heavily in shows in order to grow the brand.

Where's the statement that it's nearing 4 million? I've definitely not seen that anywhere.

I wasn't quite correct. They are nearing four million combined subscribers between All-Access and Showtime. Projecting 8 million between the two by 2020. Still more than enough for CBS to foot the Discovery bill if Netflix were to drop out for some reason. Though CBS is looking to expand to international markets. Which means they may not want Netflix at all by the time season two rolls around.

Moonves said CBS All Access would be available in Canada by the first half of 2018 and would expand to more countries on multiple continents. “We will add content from across our corporate portfolio to make our service more and more attractive,” he said.

Next year Canada for example. Currently I can just watch it on space channel or cravetv (another streaming service)

Heck, Netflix International may have some kind of right of first refusal renewal option season by season. If they drop Discovery, they may end up competing against it.

You realize those things need to be replaced season to season? And sometimes even episode to episode given how much wear the actors put on the things.

Rotten Tomatoes is a joke.

That's all.
They force an unnatural/forces binary. Most critics I read actually don't like it. But it's a nice aggregator. If people use it wrong that doesn't make the platform a joke.

I've read the reviews. And yeah 80 percent like it. The issue people don't understand is that 80% does not mean it's an 8/10. It means that 80% of reviews range from "it's pretty good" "to next coming of Jesus Christ". As far as it being a joke? At what point do you have enough pop culture "icon" shows showing up with high RT scores that maybe there's a correlation ? Whether it's a chicken and egg situation, that's another debate.
