50th Anniversary Rewatch Thread

Interesting...the cut ending might be why I felt that the pacing of the aired ending was off...they weren't done yet. But was it actually filmed and cut, or only on paper?

Playing catch up with Amok Time. Great opener for season 2. Great visuals for the planet Vulcan. One thing I noted as I watched the episode that I have never noticed before is how when Kirk and Spock are talking alone in Spock's quarter's the first time how Spock's hands are shaking. Spock is fighting to control his shaking hands.

I like the scene where Spock invites his closest friends, Kirk obviously, and oh, yeah, Doctor McCoy would you come along too. McCoy seemed genuinely moved as he said "I would be honored sir."

I always have to mimic the way Tpau says that "De air is de air". Finally the final scene is funny when Spock finds out Kirk is not dead. His happy reaction and then having to scale it back to his normal Vulcan reserve is touching and fun.

A decent episode Michael Forest and Leslie Parish are good guest stars. Fascinating to see the old fashioned attitude about women leaving the service after they find a husband. Scotty acted very atypically this episode. He needs to concentrate on the ship. It was good balance between action on the planet and scenes on the Enterprise. Uhura had some good work this time. Chekov really needed a haircut. No matter how arrogant he was, I ended up feeling sorry for Apollo in the end.

I know I'm coming in late on the whole T'Pring business, but "the property of the victor" clause only attaches to the marriage contract because she demanded, for her hand, a fight to the death.

Who does that? No Vulcan woman had done that in living memory. It was shocking. So T'Pau pointedly reminded T'Pring that if you force men to fight, the winner is going to own you. Play by the ancient rules, and you'll be owned according to the ancient rules.

If T'Pring had just married Spock as planned, they'd be equal partners. Sarek used his socio-economic status as a planetary ambassador to lord it over Amanda, which explains her submissiveness.

Funny, I don't even remember Sarek being a domineering jerk. She certainly extols Sarek and the Vulcan way, as being better than ours... and she isn't meek or submissive or dominated, from what I can tell.

As I quoted earlier:
Amanda: Shall we continue the tour? My husband did request it.
Kirk: It sounded more like a command.
Amanda: Of course. He's a Vulcan. I'm his wife.

Try getting away with that on campus.

Vague. Are campuses a particularly important example? It doesn't look good for Sarek here, but there's wiggle room for Trek to get out of this.

"The Changeling", Episode 32, September 29th

Tonight's Episode: The low budget premake(preboot?) of The Motion Picture.

No, but he'd look cute in a pair of earmuffs, and you could maybe put a mitten on top of his antenna thingie.

Watching TMP the other night I was alarmed all over again how directly they lifted bits from The Changeling. Following the idea is one thing, but when Spock figures out that Vejur has been talking too fast for them to understand in the middle of a devastating attack. It's like a Star Trek needle drop.

(The lifts from One of Our Planets is Missing were both more subtle as well as more obscure.)
