What I liked:

- The looks. The show wasn't as blue as expected and I liked the yellows. Not stylish like JJTrek but pretty enough.
- Michelle Yeoh. I liked her, she had charisma and that nice sense of humour.
- The friendly banter among the crew at the start.
- That little bit of exploration and excitement at the start when Burnham went out in the spacesuit. I guess we'll just see war from now on. :/

What I didn't like:
- The dialogue was shit. Can Trek never hire writers who can write good dialogue instead of a whole bunch of statements and perfectly worded speeches that just serve to move the plot along? It felt stilted, unnatural, just really bad.
- The whole thing left me pretty cold. I didn't really feel it. I didn't care about these people.
- The Klingon makeup is a disaster because it prevents the actors from acting. You can't see any facial expressions. And T'Kuvma couldn't even speak properly. It was so awful.
- Plot was full of cliches.
- Actions made little sense most of the time.

I can't help but wonder if it's just a terrible idea to have so many people involved who have worked on Trek before. Guys like Nick Meyer are just bound to have a conservative approach to Star Trek and give us all these things I don't really want to see anymore. Instead of fun dialogue, interesting character dynamics and new ideas.

Exactly. People can have their own sense of taste as to whether or not they like the new design of the Klingons, but the design is rather poor from a purely technical standpoint. At the very least, they should have done something about the dental prosthetics, because T'Kuvma sounded like he was talking with a mouth full of marbles. I appreciate trying to take the Klingons in a new direction, but as this series goes on, they're going to have to significantly change the Klingon makeup to make it more practical for filming.

Klingons are aliens. To expect them to emote or even sound like humans is illogical. :techman:

Pretty sure they could have fixed the speech problems caused by the teeth in ADR. The fact that they didn't tells me it was a conscious choice.

Just watched the first episode will do episode 2 tomorrow, im interested by the ending of episode one only having to get up early for work tomorrow is stopping me going onto episode 2, i thought Sonequa Martin-Green did well as the lead, I like some of the nods like to the vulcan training school and kathless etc,

I'm really struggling with the new klingon look and design maybe im just too used to TNG/DS9 Klingons but it just isn't clicking for me at the moment, also im not fully understanding the whole no contact with the Klingons for 100 years.

For the rest of the series i want some more crew development and some more science based stories.

Impairing your actors' ability to speak and emote is not a feature, it's a bug. Actors can always emote the way you tell them to, so deliberately handicapping them makes no sense. After all, a good actor can always pretend they're talking with a mouth full of cotton.

Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't do that, considering how badly it impacted the actors' performances.
The fact that they didn't tells me it was a conscious choice.
Wow, you downed the entire pitcher of Kool-Aid! It's clearly just a mistake that they decide to live with for monetary/time/contractual reasons.

Finished watching the first episode.

PROS
The alien planet, fixing the well.
The sense of exploration when Burhnam did the space walk through the asteroids

CONS
Except for the banter, a lot of the dialogue felt very stilted. It was mostly cliche "scanners at maximum" type lines with some speechifying thrown in.
The Klingons talk like Klingons, all about houses and honor, but don't like Klingons at all IMO. They are like a different alien races but with all the cliches of TNG Klingons turned up to 10. The ships don't look Klingon either. Is it too much to ask to have a few D7 Cruisers? Come on!

Overall, it feels like a reboot of Trek. Looks shiny. Production value is very high and ambitious. Storytelling is interesting. You can tell it is Star Trek but the details are different.

He didn't tell her to. In fact, he specifically cautions against doing something rash because she is trying to undo something that already happened (the attack which killed her parents). It is the emotional reaction to the connection with the Klingons specifically which triggers the incident. Burnham feels she knows the Klingons, and she has the only way to stop them.

Well yeah. I meant he told her how to stop the klingons. The rest of what I said stands though....

What Does The Message Say?

It Says Because Of The Way You Insulted Him, It'll Be A Cold Day In Hell Before He'll Ever Authorize The Installation Of The New Holo-Emitters On Your Ship.

Furthermore, He Says You And All Future Captains Of The Enterprise Can Suck It. If Any Of Them Ask Why, He'll Be Sure To Tell Them It's You They Have To Thank For The Lack Of Holographic Messaging.

Well, Screw Him. Paper Print Outs And Subspace Radio Was Good Enough For Captain Heart, So It's Good Enough For Us And The Enterprise.

Okay, haven't read through all the comments, but I just thought I'd say I saw it (still waiting for the second one) and I really don't understand the negativity.

It's awesome! Is it perfect? No. But it's a damn good start.

I was bothered by the holographic displays and videoconferencing, but that's the purist in me. I'll likely get used to that. After all, with the MCU already showing this kind of technology in the 21st century, it no longer seems futuristic to just have screens only.

I also don't get the comments about it being boring or having bad acting. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and thought Sonequa Martin-Greene, Michelle Yeoh and Doug Jones were just fine. The Klingon dialogue did feel a bit stilted, but it's also the first time we've had entire scenes spoken in Klingon. Most of the time they're speaking English. Even in the past, when Klingons are speaking in their own language it sounds broken and choppy like that.

A few things that bugged me: if the other Klingon houses are going to look different, we didn't see that here. Not a single Klingon with hair or without ridges. That needs to be explained. Also, all those ships and not one D-7? Also, not seeing the Discovery herself or meeting any regulars but Saru and Burnham. Saru is a fun character, but I really hope he's not defined purely by being afraid all the time.

But otherwise, I'm regretting nothing whatsoever. As series premieres go, this one ranks above probably all of them except maaaaaybe "Emissary". Maybe. But I'll have to re-evaluate later, as I just loved "Encounter at Farpoint" and "Caretaker" the first time I saw them, but having watched them again recently as a middle-aged man, I think "EAF" is just terrible and Caretaker truly was a snooze.

I love the feeling from this series, though. It's very different, and doesn't feel like a retread, but it feels like Star Trek and I love that.

We'll see how I feel 15 episodes from now.

The whole flashback of Georgiou taking her on struck me as odd, actually. It was stated that Michael had just left the Vulcan Science Academy, and implied pretty clearly that she has not spent any time at Starfleet Academy along the way. Since when does someone with that background get to step into a command-line position on a Federation startship?

I'll bet there was a similar situation on the USS Intrepid.

Hint: It's because everyone else is not you. Just because you find something entertaining doesn't mean that's the default correct opinion. Why you seem to have such difficulty with this concept is baffling.

What I mean is, they'd throw their voice out there and their bodies too, but these Klingons seem very heavy? They seem to lack charisma. And we have to spend a whole season with them as villains....
In terms of their appearance, these Klingons reminded me of the vampires from the Underworld movies.

These Klingons were very low energy. Maybe they were of the boring and plodding subspecies of Klingons. As cartoonish as the TNG Klingons may have been, at least they were entertaining, especially the bug-eyed Gowron.

It may have Trek shapes and styles, but it just doesn't feel like Star Trek.
It didn't feel like Star Trek to me either.

There's a thread in the General Trek Discussion forum titled "My Grandma mistook 'The Orville' for a new 'Star Trek' show". I wonder how many viewers mistook ST Discovery for The Orville. :sigh::eek::p

If a viewer didn't already know this was Star Trek while watching the pilot, the mistake could easily have been made.

Where did you see me saying that everyone had to agree with me? I was reading the comments last night and worried about what I was going to see. I just saw it and I don't agree. You seem to think that me saying "I don't understand" is the same as me saying "agree with me or be wrong". What's really baffling is I'm nowhere near the only person to say things like "I don't understand how you feel that way".

Theory.

The Vulcans on the Intrepid are the least intelligent Vulcans, who all washed out of the learning academy/science institute and couldn't get a job in the expeditionary force.

What were their options?

Janitors on Vulcan, or Space heroes in Starfleet?
