Discovery is being “overshadowed" by The Orville

it’s a bit of a mixed bag for The Orville. Clearly, the Seth MacFarlane-created and -starring sci-fi series was going to take a hit once it was deprived of the NFL lead-ins that opened its first two episodes. And it did, with last night’s Orville falling a hard 50% in the demo from the final numbers of September 17 show, which started at 8:48 PM ET due to NFL overruns.

That has to hurt for Fox, who have made the show a high priority. However, at the same time, The Orville did rise 10% among the 18-49 from its lead-in. Also, Live+3 viewing for the MacFarlane series’ September 17 airing drew a 2.8/9, the first non-sport show to beat the Emmys since 1997 — that’s a chest beater for Fox.

So, he feels truly sorry for other people because he can't share his enthusiasm with them?
So, you've never had enthusiasm and a desire to share it and sorry that you can't? I have trouble parsing that.
Sounds kinda "cultish" to me. I've talked to lots of Christians who say they are sorry I don't believe in Jesus.
I'll not understand the idea of wanting to share an emotion and experience as being "cultish." To me, there are experiences and emotions meant to be share, because human beings are communal creatures, and want to share that experience. I see it with my children, with teenagers, and with couples I counsel all the time.

Well why is Burnham being put into Spock's family is a good thing then?
It expands upon his history as well as Vulcan culture out large. It many ways, it turns the Spock dynamic the other way, by presenting a human in Vulcan culture as the outsider.
Sybok died (2285/6) before Picard was ever born (2304).
He doesn't have to be dead.
It really isn't. Both have an action adventure tone mixed with fun.
Exactly.

Yeah?

See if you can parse this:

I feel bad for all the negative, skeptical people.
Don't feel bad for me

I'm sorry, but I do genuinely feel bad.

It's not about "having a desire to share enthusiasm." It's about the smuggery of pretending to pity someone for not sharing your tastes.

I still think CBS will air the premiere a couple of times to hook people. If they don't get the numbers they want for CBSAA, in about 6 months to a year (before season 2) they will air season 1 on TV to hook more people and it will be full of watch season 2 on CBSAA.

Being a network, they have a lot more options than Netflix or Hulu to get revenue for this show and I expect them to leverage everything in their power to milk every penny they can. Whether that be DVD sales, syndication, putting it on regular network at a later date or whatever.

They never aired good fight on cbs and so don’t expect dsc to be done that way.

Phew! Good to see we made it so far, without accusations of racism directed at those of us who aren't too excited for STD!

And personally I take an optimistic outlook. If STD doesn't get the viewers they need, and is a huge flop, if The Orville continues getting good ratings, it only makes it much more likely that CBS will try to do another, more optimistic and light, Star Trek show.

Orville rating took a nosedive when moved to its regular time slot.

If dsc fails it won’t mean another trek series fir a long time. It’s nkt going to so it doesn’t matter.

Why is it "smug" to genuinely feel bad that some people can't feel the same excitement / happiness others do? I think wishing someone that is a good thing. Again, the emotional reaction really isn't necessy and accusing me of lying ("you use the word "pretending") and calling me smug is a boarderline personal attack. I'dappreciate if you would contain yourself a little better when a post hits home like mine somehow did.

I actually really like the poster I was responding to and have generally been aligned with him through the years. So it begs the question "what the hell do you know" about my intentions.

I don't look down upon it. I just think it's unfortunate.

I have plenty of "magical moments of enthusiasm" - even from watching TV shows. Discovering Westworld was a recent one. Getting back to topic, so is The Orville.

Well thank you, I genuinely appreciate that. I'm glad my empathy is recognized and supported by you.

The "cultish" comment was way over the line sir. Way over and unnecessary, and you know it.

And I'm not sure how Christians might feel about having their faith compared to a cult.

I think everyone needs to take a calm down pill and perhaps reconvene after Sunday night when reality will become more clear and we will have something substantial to debate, not a bunch of manipulated marketing products.

Thank you for the clarification.

When someone says their fine, and then you keep pushing the "I feel sorry for people who don't feel the same way" is when it goes into a "cultish" push. Just like people who constantly push religion no matter how many times someone else says that they're fine without it.

Discovery could be great, it could be crap, it could be somewhere in the middle. But, simply put, nothing about it makes me feel like I did when other Trek's came around. Everyone's mileage will vary.

When I'm sorry that I can't share my enthusiasm, I'm feeling sorry for myself, quite honestly, and I try to avoid that. I think @BillJ's read on it sounding like something cultish, to feel sorry for others when you can't share the wonder with them, is spot on.

I think that walking back a smug comment is a reasonably sensible thing to do.

At least Sybok makes sense to a degree. A Vulcan cast out for embracing emotions and being the blacksheep of the family. It makes sense why Spock would never talk about him unless pressed about him.

Burnham is a square peg being hammered into a round hole. It's a stupid idea that should have been sacked.
Not really - again:

- Burnam is a child whose parents (who are in Starfleet) are killed on Vulcan territory.
- Sarak IS the Vulcan Ambassador to Earth AND is married to a Human
^^^^
IDK - but if there was a Human child on Vulcan needing surrogate parents, Sarek seems the loigcal choice here.

There are no other humans on Vulcan?

It could be great, I still hold out hope. But it feels like it is being done to name check TOS.

Now, if there is some kind of connection between the parents and Sarek, it would be a bit better.
