Discovery is being “overshadowed" by The Orville

I'm genuinely sorry for you, that you feel bad when other folks don't share all of your enthusiasms.

I have plenty of "magical moments of enthusiasm" - even from watching TV shows. Discovering Westworld was a recent one. Getting back to topic, so is The Orville.
Methinks Vger23 was not saying that he felt sorry that BillJ could not share his enthusiasm for Discovery or other of Vger's specific enthusiasms...
...but Vger was saying (right or wrong) that he felt sorry that Billj could not feel enthusiasm in general (e..g, "...[if] we're so jaded and programmed to be skeptical of everything, what's the point?)

I must have missed the post where BillJ declared that he feels no enthusiasm for anything in life at all.

Vger23 feels bad that someone isn't excited like they are and wants to share that enthusiasm? I guess I weird because if I'm excited or enthusiastic I want to share it.

I'm not sure that I can quite parse that, but I don't expect everyone to like or get excited by the things that I do. I sure don't feel sorry for them that they don't share my interests.

Don't feel bad for me. I'm past getting excited for something simply because it has the "Star Trek" label. Like everything else, they are going to have to sell me on it being worth my time.

Right now, nothing about Discovery has fired my imagination the way TOS and, to a lesser degree, TNG did. I'm sure part of it is getting older, but part of it is that it doesn't seem to really be wanting to stand on its own and that it is chasing the same grimdark stories that every other sci-fi drama is. I don't need fifteen episodes of Star Trek's greatest hits as played by Marilyn Manson all in one place.

Delving deeper into canon sounds boring as fuck. As does war with the Klingons.

I hope I'm wrong.

YMMV.
Agreed with this. this sums up my feelings about Discovery.

I just watched Star Trek (2009) and had a blast for the umpteenth time. You don't have to be a slave to canon to use all the toys in the toy box and do callbacks to the other series.

I find these two statements mutually exclusive. You all but say you're a TOS purist and then proclaim your love of Kelvin Trek, yet the tone of Kelvin Trek is very different from TOS. The only carryover is the characters, with rather different characterization (other than Bones maybe).

If you liked TOS and you liked Kelvinverse than I would think Discovery would be right up your alley because of the way it seems to be designed to strike a mathematical midpoint between prime and kelvin sensibilities.

For a franchise that everyone demands and expects to promote hope, humor, and positivity...we sure have fans who can't get there themselves.

They're starting from a premise of Mr. Spock's long lost sister Michael. Fanfic level garbage was probably not the best place to start if they wanted hope and positivity.

I disagree. I find the tone of Kelvin Trek, especially 09, very fitting with the action adventurous spirit of TOS.

Factually incorrect. Michael is Sarek's ward, and she has a complex history with Sarek. Secondly, Sybok would like a word with you about the "fanfic" level of garbage.

At least Sybok makes sense to a degree. A Vulcan cast out for embracing emotions and being the blacksheep of the family. It makes sense why Spock would never talk about him unless pressed about him.

Burnham is a square peg being hammered into a round hole. It's a stupid idea that should have been sacked.

Disagree. I think it is completely workable and will likely make more sense with context.

Sybok is just as dumb and stupid because Spock never talked about him either. Also, Spock or Sybok are married according to Picard.

Well why is Burnham being put into Spock's family is a good thing then?

I dunno, this kinda feels like 'Well if you like South Park you should like Family Guy' kinda reasoning. What resonates with people's interests can't be so easily simplified into like, a venn-diagram all the time.

So, he feels truly sorry for other people because he can't share his enthusiasm with them?

Sounds kinda "cultish" to me. I've talked to lots of Christians who say they are sorry I don't believe in Jesus.
