A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

For Sonequa Martin-Green, being cast as the lead in Star Trek: Discovery means “the sky is the limit for all of us.”...

“So having me as the first black lead of a Star Trek, just blasts that into a million pieces. I am eternally grateful that the diverse casting of our show means that we are now a part of the conversation and hopefully a part of making the world a better place, as cliché as this sounds. Because I really believe it and think its vital for us all right now,”
So I take it Sonequa has problems keeping her personal view of reality in line with the rest of the world?

I might regret this later, but in what way do “her personal view of reality” and that of “the rest of the world” differ?

So Avery Brooks was either not black or not the lead on DS9?
Oh my god, it's clear what she's trying to say. She is the first female black lead of a Star Trek show. The interviewer could very well misheard. Or she simply hasn't internalized every last aspect of Star Trek and just isn't as aware of Sisko as some would wish. It's not a crime to not know all the Trek shows.

Still, I don't see anything here that would prompt me to declare her “view of reality isn't in line with the rest of the world”.

Her personal view of reality differs from that of the rest of the world due to the fact that she is not the first black lead of a Star Trek show.

Avery Brooks was.

Yea no, you don't get to rewrite an interview just because the person says something you don't like.

A knowledgeable interviewer wouldn't have just let that slide. For example (hypothetically):

Interviewer: "You mean since Avery Brooks's Sisko, of course?"

SM-G: "Yes, of course, I mean black female lead."

Interviewer: "Yes, indeed, that's a definite first."

In video interviews here and here she seems to be completely aware of the fact that she's playing the first “female black lead”, even to the point where she subtly corrects the interviewer who thinks she's the first female lead period. So I have a veeeery hard time believing she suddenly forgot about the other black lead we got in Star Trek.

That one missed word has given all the bigots on Reddit (and presumably elsewhere; I don't dare to check Facebook) the chance to jump on her.

Just shows how far we still have to go.

Well, those kind of folks usually don't really need an excuse to attack. I don't envy someone like Martin-Green who I hope has found a way to just ignore the bigots.

*lol* Poor DS9 never gets any respect.

Joking...it's obvious what she meant, even if the "female" wasn't included.

It's not my job to augment what was said. My job is to report what is said; not to give commentary. I noticed it right away though.

Besides, to me, saying that in the article would be bashing her and given that I think it was just faulty wording, I didn't want to do that.

I feel like it has been more of an oversight on the part of the way articles are written on other sites. I haven't read the TBBS one yet, but I have definitely have seen Reddit all aflutter.

Oh, well. I think her performance will speak for itself and DS9's legacy is in no danger.

I deleted my post mainly because it felt wrong and not really a big deal, but I wasn't really responding about what you wrote, but what the Independant wrote. They should have added clarification to the article to make sure there was no confusion. I don't blame Green, I blame the writers of the original article.

Same. I couldn't remember were I had read it, and I appreciate your clarification.
