Isn't it dumb to only have 1 Doctor on Voyager and NX-01 Enterprise?

The Enterprise -B was leaving space dock for a run around the solar system and as it happened they were the only starship available to respond to the ships in trouble is odd too were where the other starships that could have responded which goes to show that anything can happen. But it would have made more sense to have medical staff on board being it was first time out docks but they didn't

I agree. I makes sense to always have a full staff aboard any Starfleet ship, no matter how routine a mission might feel. Only head canon reason I can think of is maybe they felt having first aide was enough or maybe ships sometimes carry cryo -chambers were you can put a a injured man in and basically freeze him until you can get him to a doctor. I know "Voyager" had some of those things so that could also be a possible reason for such a small medical staff on the ship.

The Enterprise D had a least 3 doctors, which makes sense for them. There might be different specialists aboard due to having so many civilians and a much larger crew.

What if though if the maquis had attacked them, killed the doctor,nurse and disabled the EMH program in the attack? You would find yourself in a military situation without any kind of medical personal which would be bad because people would most likely start getting injuried or killed. Even with things playing out like it did it still seems kind of like your taking your chances with just the EMH as your only doctor. Would anyone really feel good if Tom Paris had been the CMO if the EMH had been permantly lost?

I wonder if when the Defiant went on missions how big of the medical staff they would bring. Smaller crew of about 50 but also no EMH as support. I would imagine it would be based on the type of mission they were doing.

I get the reference to Ezri but all counselors don't have to be as tech useless as Troi. They are starfleet officers so they must have gotten some the basic training skills other officers have gotten. I can only wonder how Troi was able to pass.

Is it unusual? I imagine their are other Betazoids in Starfleet and you got other telepathic species like Vulcans that can read minds. I know reading minds is not the same as feeling other people's emotions but it actually sounds even more reliable. Who needs to know what the bad guy is feeling if you can instead find out what he is thinking.

That's true but that was pretty early on. Even though it's never said I always got the impression that they must have upgraded the infirmary at some point because it didn't look all that bad in a episode like "The Sound of her Voice" to give one example. Granted it wasn't perfect because he couldn't even perform the surgery to save Kira when they went back in time and meet their future offspring.

I think most officers can handle some basic first aid. I'm pretty sure it was said that they get some basic field medic training in the Academy.

I don't think vulcan can read one's mind without performing a meld meld, which would require touching them, and probably consent - lest that be a pretty big violation of personal rights and maybe even similar to rape. Empathy at a distance is more useful for a counselor.

Per Distaster (TNG) the Emergency Medical Course attended by Worf at the Academy (likely available to most Command and/or Security cadets) includes emergency childbirth which as a 17-year veteran first aider I can tell you is not covered on a 'basic first aid' course but is technican or even EMT-level training.

No information on that, the suggestion that none of the red or gold-shirts on Voyager had attend the course would suggest that it's separate, voluntary and rarely attended, but then we have the issue that if that's the case, then why did Worf of all people do the course?

The most we can say for definate is that it is isn't compulsary, however I imagine having the course would increase your options as far as assignments go and IMO most of the "security and services" personnel, and at least some of the engineers and tactical/command officers are "encouraged" to take the course.

Worf often seemed the sort who went above and beyond the minimal requirements. He's not a lazy fellow. It doesn't surprise me he took every course he felt might be worth something in his career, and as a lone Klingon, he probably didn't socialize much so he had the time and needed to fill it.
