Trek is dead. Long live Trek!
What I've found out, "The Orville" is too "light" for me.
What I is what I've seen in TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager.
What I don't want is something similar to "Stargate Universe".
I'm not that impressed by the recent Star Trek movies either.

TOS, TNG, DS9, season 1, 2 and 3 of Voyager, NCIS, NCIS Los Angeles, NCIS New Orleans, CSI, CSI New York, CSI Miami, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Alantis, Hawaii 5 0, Without A Trace, Star Wars........ I can't remember all!
Thank goodness never did TOS did "doom and gloom," aside from, okay, the Talosians torturing Pike in the first pilot, Kirk having to kill his best friend in the second pilot, and McCoy discovering that his lost love has been killed and replaced by a Salt Vampire in the first-aired episode . . ..
How dare DISCOVERY begin with bad things happening!
(I swear to God, if "City on the Edge of Forever" debuted today, half the internet would be complaining "Where's the hope? Where's the optimism? The REAL Kirk would never let an innocent woman die!")
And yet TOS also brought us Trouble with the Tribbles and Squire of Gothos.
Will we see that degree of creative latitude with Discovery or will it be 100% grimdark?
Dare I admit that "The Squire of Gothos" scared me as a kid? A malignant brat of a super-being hunting Captain Kirk for sport? That was a creepy notion . . ..
Never thought of that one as light-hearted!
On the other, "Little Green Men" is one of my favorite DS9 eps, so, yes, there's room for the occasional comedy in TREK.

There's some speculation about him being a Q. There might be some truth in that, as I see it.
Peter David wrote a novel, Q-Squared, that strongly implied that Trelane was Q's son, although he wasn't allowed to come and say that outright.
I think the novel predated Q2 . . . by some years. It was during the TNG era, before VOYAGER.
Even if they're weak...I don't need their melodramatic struggles.I agree that there is too much touchy-feely, overly-sensitive whiny emo crap in recent TV. I see enough of that in real life already.
I prefer fictional people to be of strong, hard, and stoic character.

The original Ghostbusters is fantastic....aaaand it lacks two critical things everyone in writing now says you can't do without: a central theme (a point; love lost, redemption, etc...), and character arcs.
Ghostbusters doesn't have either of them...oh no! It's bound to fail! No one will be able to connect with the movie...oh...wait.
Star Trek isn't Ghostbusters.
No, which is good.
But Star Wars also isn't Mary Poppins yet both have a central theme and character arcs.
Now TOS and most of TNG also lack a central theme and character arcs.
We're not given a message, and characters are preformed and generally don't change much.
Instead of being given a message, we are given an issue and shown different conclusions by characters regarding that issue.
We are then to draw out own conclusion on that issue based on what we saw of the various conclusions of characters.
