News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

I know the Green uniform = Medical, but didn't catch the insignia.
It's a cross and atom

The pilot was exactly what I was hoping for, a light hearted, fun sci-fi adventure.
I liked the humor, and most of the characters were pretty likeable. We got a few more serious moments that I thought worked out pretty well. They even managed to work in some decent sci-fi ideas into it with the time manipulation.
Using the tree and the time device to defeat the Krill was a pretty unique way to defeat them.

This is how I feel about it as well. The Orville feels like second-season TOS, when they were in a groove and had those bits of banter and little jokes here and there.
Except that it's not gelled together yet. Still some work to do to get into their groove. The humor felt forced rather than seamlessly integrated.

I think that the serious moments that occur in this pilot, namely the horrific murdering of the lab tech('s head) and the final scene with Grayson and the Admiral show that the producers are trying to do something more significant than a dick joke/farty mcfarterson comedy hour. There is some actual thought going into this with MacFarlane style humor tossed in throughout.

The trick will be balancing the humor so it is not too crude, or frequent. If it fits the scenario... good. If not, it's painfully obvious and reduces the quality of the show.

But real-life Admiral Halsey was one of the four 5-star admirals.
Sure, but that doesn't mitigate the fact that The Orville's Halsey is a five-star admiral doesn't make much sense, unless they've changed the rank system for the admirals, and that would be weird considering they've adhered to the rest of the rank system of the U.S. Navy.

Didn't he command...the Carrier Enterprise?
Yup, which is probably why this character was named as such.

Didn't he command...the Carrier Enterprise?

Well, not directly, he commanded Saratoga as a captain. But he was Commander Carrier Division Two (Enterprise, Yorktown) and commanded the task force for the Doolittle raid (Enterprise, Hornet) so I'm saying, yes!

Well maybe they use five stars more regularly? The British used five star admirals a lot more than the US, they even still have a couple, retired of course. As far as the rank system, I guess we'll have to see if there is a JG or a sub-lieutenant to know if its USN or RN.

The fart jokes and penis jokes didn't negatively impact Orphan Black one whit, and in fact quite the contrary in every case.

Point being, not that I'm drawing a parallel between The Orville and OB, but, if fart jokes and penis jokes are problems, then it's certainly not because of their mere existence.
