News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

The rank system follows the U.S. Navy pretty much (and I picked up on that last night as I was watching, hearing their rank mentioned and then looking at the epaulettes).

For the division emblems on the chest, I'm gathering Blue uniform/Union Ship emblem = Command/Operations, Orange uniform/Orange Gears emblem = Support Services/Engineering, Red uniform/Red Shield and Wings emblem = Security?

I know the Green uniform = Medical, but didn't catch the insignia.
And purple is admiralty. I didn't pay attention to any of the emblems this time around, but I will for the next episode.

I am amused that Adm. Halsey is a five-star admiral when in the U.S. Navy, a five-star admiral doesn't exist except during a time of war and is the highest ranking officer. I doubt that's his position in the Union considering the attention he was giving the Orville assignment and how lay back his work schedule appears to be.

The accelerated growth in the beamed area pushed out the parts that had already grown. The growth was fed by whatever Amazing Process it was that would have allowed the seed to grow in inhospitable environments. At the point that I realized that technobabble could explain it that made more sense than stuff I'd suspended disbelief over in Star Trek, I no longer needed to explain it.

You know, the skiffy stuff was so much more interesting than a fucking space anomaly.

I watched the episode and then rewatched it later on my Fox app before going to bed, lol! Then I was just going over the memory of the photos of the characters (for some reason always thinking more of Adrianne Palicki and Halston Sage...) on the way to work this morning and sorting it out as best I could.

Also to add the grey uniforms/white jackets with Hazardous emblem = laboratory personnel?

TNG's entire 1st season was pretty bad but it is now revered as a great show.

To this day I don't understand why TNG was granted 3 years to gain its footing whereas TOS barely managed three seasons with higher quality. Today, though, the competition is so cutthroat that you need to hit the ground running such that comparing it to TNG is apples and oranges. A good example of shows not being given time to adjust is the rebooted Muppets. It face-planted right out of the starting gate after a lot of hype and then was canceled rather than waiting and seeing if it's mid-season retool could recover the initial interest.

Paramount was trying to build syndication distribution for dramas. But, the reason TNG stayed on the air was because its ratings were good from the beginning.

Ships magically travel faster than the speed of light and there's a device that can rapidly accelerate the span of time in a bubble, but that's your scientific complaint?

It doesn't work that way. You can't show something on-screen and then say "oh, warp drive so everything's ok".

Slippery slope. That's how technobabble and bad holodeck episodes started in TNG.

It wasn't a blow away first episode but I liked it. I laughed at most of the jokes, I loved the score, the visuals, and most of the characters I could see myself enjoying.

Inserting comedy is always going to be tough. Triggering other emotions are a lot easier making someone laugh can be really tough. What makes people cry or angry tend to be fairly universal but humor is so much harder.

I find Seth's style to be hit or miss with me and as a result some jokes landed with me and others didn't but none were so bad that is ruined the episode for me.

As someone who loved MASH and 90's Trek with a longing for a bit of that nostalgia I feel like the show could become very good over time.
