Discovery tackles current political divide

Remember, the ufp is said to have some negative aspects too in DSC..they're not completely faultless in what happens.

The UFP always has negative aspects, starting with the treaty port it was going to force on Eminiar VII in "A Taste of Armageddon".

I think the 'allegory' thing is so overblown. It's just too passive and half-hearted. It may have been okay in the 60s. But by the time TNG came around, you had had St. Elsewhere, HSB, All in the Family and the like. Star Trek's soft hand just felt sentimental and quaint. And it's 2017 now. If they continue to play it that safe, the show will just feel old-fashioned

I agree. It may make the show feel old-fashioned. I think the majority of people are now use to storytellers not pulling any punches

I can't say I agree. While Star Trek certainly did some good stories where it confronted an issue head on, I think one of the strengths of science fiction is the ability to do an allegorical story which takes a difficult issue and frames it in a fantastical way that allows you to look at it without the contemporary emotions clouding it, or to see it in a new light through subtext. I don't think it's a surprise that another of my favourite all time shows, Buffy, was also heavily allegorical. I seem to like that sort of story.

I highly doubt that a major city could be rebuilt from scratch in that short a time)
200 years is ages to rebuild a city. Most buildings currently in the US are younger than that.

It's an understandable temptation using political climate as a source for a story line or major theme. Must say they do date though. Years from now those who may re-watch Discovery might get the same sense we do watching a message from old Star Trek that might hit in a heavy handed manner coming across all corny.

I wonder how 'accurate' they dare to be though? Do they go for the one-dimensional evil characterisation of a Trump like figure and have the superior ideals of the Federation win through? Or do they show flaws in the ineffectiveness that stems from Federation ideology not necessarily appealing after all?

Attack political views they don't agree with?
Yeah, something art in general and Star Trek in particular have done since both began. Why should Trek stop now?

What, continue to throw a hissy fit over the election like 99% of Hollywood has and attack the members of their fanbase who voting for Trump?
It's been what, almost a year since the election and Trumps close to nine months in. There's a lot more to mine now than just a lost election.

Yep, we will be mining the Federation failure to offer a better alternative to Klingon aggression?

In a way. I'm wondering how Discovery will show the Federation dealing with aggression. Whether we see war as an answer.

I am kind of bored of US politics. I guess because of massive overexposure in the media during the last year. So I hope they keep it allegorical and don't go the Supergirl route, which lacked any kind of subtlety.
To be fair their was MANY a time TOS was a subtle as a hammer to your head:
"Let That Be Your Final Battlefield" <--- IMO the worst offender.
and
"The Omega Glory"
and
"A Private Little War"
are just a few examples.

It's Star Trek. War is never the answer, but it makes for good drama. Expect a lot of fretting about war. followed by fighting.
Reference to Lorca.. "Lorca is a guy who conducts war standing up, as if he’s leading an orchestra". (Jason Isaacs). Sounds like war to me and someone who plays at it like music..

Well I didn't say there wouldn't be war. Lorca may very well be a warrior who's trying to find a different.

Well, I plan to watch this, at least the first season. But if they're just going to be retreading the same old ground that the internet at large and media in general has been going over ad nauseum while couching it in allegory, zzzzzzzz. Maybe if they'd met their original launch date they could have been ahead of the curve.

Still, who knows? It could be a fresh perspective on recent history, but somehow I doubt it.
