Beyond The Trek

I am not sure if the fan productions forum is the best place for this. However, here is yet another low budget independent film.

Edit: The '9 Media' YouTube channel claims this to be a "Star Trek, action drama type movie" in the video description

They appear to be hoping to appeal to those who do not like Star Trek discovery:
The Star Trek Discovery series is airing soon on CBS, or is it already? No one really cares tbh lol. This independent film maker brought us a movie that looks a lot more promising. Smh CBS.

Well they've already lost me with that statement.
It was originally to be called "Teleios" but they changed the name to "Beyond The Trek" in post prodution. The story has nothing to do with Star Trek. They are just hoping to cash in by being controversial. Clearly the movie can't stand on its own merit.

um yeah it looks like something Sci-Fi sorry SYFY would make a huge deal out of for a month, then run it once a year ...sorry guys

Even ignoring the sentiment, that description reads like it was written by a 12 year old Youtube commentor and utterly kills this film. It's not unprofessional, it's utter garbage and an insult to the effort that clearly wen into Teleios

Must admit, some of the uniforms do look at bit like Discovery's and the Section 31 uniforms in Into Darkness:lol:

Why can't Star Trek get a proper mockbuster along the lines of Transmorphers, Atlantic Rim and The Terminators?:weep:

Seems this is where is SHOULD end up:

[Seriously - like others I say if you can't stand out on your own - don't try to promote yourself by putting other productions down.]

OK, So I did a little web surfing on this, and...

To be clear, that swipe against Star Trek: Discovery was purely on the part of 9Media, the unaffiliated Youtube channel that re-posted that preview trailer video as linked above.

Screen Media Films, the distributors of "Beyond the Trek," said nothing of the sort on their original posting of the video:

Neither does their web page for the project: http://screenmediafilms.net/productions/details/2314/Beyond-The-Trek

The production company, Thousand Mile Media, also says absolutely nothing about Star Trek: Discovery on their page for this film:
https://www.thousandmilemedia.com/teleios

And here's an interview with the director, that makes no comments at all on ST-Disc: http://promotehorror.com/2017/09/01/exclusive-interview-with-beyond-the-trek-director-ian-truitner/

Beyond the Trek has already won a number of awards on the film festival circuit. I'm willing to give it a shot. If we're going to critique a film project, let's do so on its own merit, not on the basis of some second-hand comment that its producers are in no way responsible for.

I did not consider this either a fan film or something that could be mistaken for either a Star Trek fan film or Trek itself, so I did not include it at Star Trek Reviewed. I notified the rest of the board of the film and my conclusion, and no one objected to not mentioning it.

Fair enough, that is good to hear, but I would still be interested to know why they changed the name of the film to "Beyond The Trek"? As one film review commented:
“Teleios” would have been best left to survive on its own merits. Releasing it as “Beyond the Trek” puts a bad taste in a potential viewer’s mouth by being insultingly obvious about what it hopes to rip off. And this film deserves better than to be dismissed for misapplied marketing tactics. (Insert standard disclaimer that filmmakers rarely have anything to do with such decisions. This generally comes from the distribution end.) Link
Note to those who may decide to watch this in the UK it is called "Deep Space" over here.

Yeah, I did not really have any expectation that you would post this on your site. As I had said in my opening comment:
I am not sure if the fan productions forum is the best place for this.
Perhaps if a moderator wants to move it somewhere else I would be OK about that. My first impression was that this film was a very low budget sci-fi with Trek overtones and at least a few movie reviewers seem to agree with that assessment.

The director made a vague comment about the movie having different names in different markets.

Since the movie played at film festivals as "Teleios" last year, I would venture a wild guess that the title change to "Beyond the Trek" was a bonehead home-video marketing move at the insistence of the DVD distribution company.

The DVD is a Wal-Mart exclusive... wide popular exposure, but not exactly the same target audience as indie film festivals. In the cutthroat world of commercial show business, that's the kind of compromise an indie filmmaker may need to be willing to give up a certain measure of artistic integrity and sell his soul for, in order to get that level of distribution.

Fair enough, thanks for digging deeper. I retract my earlier statement. :)

Appears more inspired by Event Horizon than anything Star Trek. At times I enjoy a campy Space Horror, if it's done poorly enough and has Betty White in it.

Teleios was never intended to reflect the Star Trek universe, though one of the vfx producers went on to work for Star Trek: Discovery... but he had also worked on Battlestar Galactica before that. The back story (and what happens after the Atromitos) is very different, I know because I worked on development for it. A lot of people that worked on the movie were sci-fi fans, but the only reference made to Star Trek was a line flub at the the end where O'Neill said "engage" accidentally and got a laugh from the film crew... which of course never made it in the final film. In the indie film world the distributors get to take what liberties they want to with naming. The filmmakers usually have no say in it. Teleios was meant to be for people that want more cerebral sci-fi, like myself... and the film itself was only a part of the full story. I hope that's helpful.
