Middle-Easterners in "Discovery"

She's fine as she is... I wouldn't mind seeing an actual Middle Eastern actor get a recurring or starring role on a Trek Series. Robau and Bashir were well liked and accepted by the Trek community, perhaps it's time for another like them.

What would really be cool would be a white guy with red curly hair and big round blue eyes, named Thomas Kim.

A lovely cocoa colored woman with big lovely green eyes named Vivian Toshiro.

A tall thin man pale skinned, with an Afro type hair and sexy "Asian" looking eyes
Named Laars Hanssen.

I don't even get why on any of the shows they had such delineation of human "race".
I always found that to be a static firm of thought.
In our current time, there are millions of people that are mixed "race".
I think if humans and others are to be believed," human " is the ONLY race left in the human species.

I would hope if they had a new series they would have as mentioned above but there might be more attention with other species being in Starfleet. Best would be f they could have non-humanoid forms in Starfleet.

Petty is wanting a specific religious background. I've never watched Startrek and thought, " where are the mennorahs?"
Or "Where are the Christmas trees?"

The first post never mentioned religion.

Though later posts, unrelated to it did.
But it's like in Next Generation, where Picard is all talking about being French and the Asian lady has a Japsnese name.
Not saying that there still won't be "pure" humans, but that even right now that is becoming less and less prevalent.

In increasingly diverse parts of the west it's becoming more common. In other parts of the world it's still quite rare.

And other parts of the world are the majority, Indian and China over 2 billion people today.

Maybe they should have made Kelvin Uhura Middle Eastern?
If they had done a full blown nuBSG and rearranged the races and genders, that would have been interesting.

Maybe increased it to include new species for the principal characters.

We know next to nothing about Robau, and Bashir was pretty much white-washed from a cultural standpoint. If they bring in a Middle-Eastern character, I want one that embraces the positive ideas that Middle-Eastern cultures embrace.

I agree, and I think that such a character is long overdue.

Positive from who's perspective? Western?

If a person can't find positive aspects in a term so purposely broad as "Middle-Eastern Culture" I don't know how to help.

I think it is pedestrian to have space characters 400+ years in the future that still have Earth customs at all. I guess there coul be one, that would be okay.
But how about the character has Earth customs that are all mixed up?

Like he has a menorah next to his statue of Budha?
Or he mingles Confucius quotes with Bible quotes?

Maybe he could be good looking black man named Sean Monahan?

As most Earth customs have lasted for thousands of years, I can't see why things would take such a left turn that they would go away entirely or be put in some kind of blender.

We only THINK they have lasted 1000 years.
Isn't it possibly that if a Jew from 4000 years ago suddenly appeared in a synagogue, they might not even know what we are doing?
The Catholic Church has made numerous radical changes from even just 60 years ago.

1000 years ago, a lot of the Christian sects that are out there now, did not exist.

I mean really think about it.
Valentine's Day, Halloween, Birthday celebrations, Christmas celebrations, Yom Kippor, Rosh Hishona, Hunakkah,
Some of these weren't even celebrated 100 years ago!
How about all of the stuff Pagans celebrate today, they think they are celebrating ancient stuff, most likely not.

Culture is very fluid.
I find the stuff they do in the shows so silly.
