Concerning Gendry i wonder why they brought him back now all of a sudden.. in past seasons he had his place as Melisandre's ritual victim due to his bastard nature but now? For me it can only be to forge Lightbringer in season 8 (if the show goes that route at all), the magical sword that the champion Azor Ahai wields.

However it was very cool to see him again and especially wiedling a warhammer.. the weapon of choice of his father (either by chance or choice, it wasn't made clear in the show).

Yes, I realised I had missed out Gendry's forging skills being of importance so I edited my post. I must have been still editing it while you posted this. However not much importance was been put on Lightbringer in the show. I think they might opt out by making Dawn into the Lightbringer. In the show there is no mention of Dawn being returned to the Daynes so Ned might have kept in and it might be in the Crypts. They did make a strong point of showing it leaning against the bed in the Tower of Joy.

Tormund is the only one left of the free folk whose face we know on the show.
The Hound has an appointment for Cleganebowl.
Jon has to survive to make some more googly eyes with his aunt.
Jorah has to cry inside while seeing Jon and Dany make googly eyes at each other.
Gendry has to row them back.
So they're safe.

Which means Beric and Thoros are the only expendable ones, which would make sense, because their story's end might reveal something about the nature of the Others and/or Lord of Light.

As Beric is dead in the books, I think he will die beyond the Wall and I think his death will be similar to the books. Thoros will probably die too as his main role was to keep bringing Beric back and the Lord of Light will be finished with him.

I am not sure about Thormund.

I think Jorah will die protecting Dany and I hope he does get to meet Lyanna Mormont sometimes before he dies.

I think the Hound will live to see Sansa and Arya again.

If Jon dies it will not be to the very end of the 8th season.

It is harder to decide Gendry's fate because he is two different characters in the book. If they go beyond the Wall in the books I think it will be Gendry with the Brotherhood especially as Beric is already dead. In the books it will be Edric that takes on the role as Robert's son but he is too young to go beyond the Wall as a fighter.

Edited to add - we also have to take in to account that Gendry's apprenticeship with Tobho Mott might be important. If it is he will survive going beyond the Wall.

We also do not really know the point of Young Griff in the book. Who takes his storyline in the show - Jon, Jorah, Gendry or do they all get some aspects of it? Or is Young Griff not important at all?

After more deliberation and reading your post, I have to largely agree on all counts, although I think Tormund is safe because he's the face of the Wildlings (also his connection with Brienne). The Hound not only needs to see Sansa and Arya again (and together hopefully), but he must face off in the Clegane Bowl.

Gendry has realigned with his position in the books, so aside from his blacksmith skills and his thematic relationship with Jon, I could see him dying.

Beric and Thoros are toast.

As for Young Griff, I think he'll still have some important part to play in the books, but his removal from the show is probably as consequencial as Lady Stoneheart's.

Speaking of her, I saw one fan theory article that suggests that perhaps the show has kind of shown her. The theory is that the hooded figure seen walking past in the background during Brienne and Arya's sparring is her as a ghost, but really it could just be any hooded woman at Winterfell.

It depends.. it works in the books where Martin had the time to write about the lore and create legends and mythology but the show is much more constrained for time so such elements might get dropped though i doubt Azor Ahai will.. Melisandre was a much too visible character and the name dropped too often (even when she met Dany for the first time in the show and they had a real discussion about the legend) to be an easter egg for book fans.

Would be really cool though to see the show's version of it.. to create it someone important has to die and it could make for one hell of a sendoff for an important character. Martin once said that he told the producers about 3 great WTF scenes he had planned all along and 2 have already happened.. the burning of Shireen at the stake by Stannis and Hodor's Hold the door scene. The third will happen near the end and creating Lightbringer would certainly fall into this category.

Ahh, very true. I haven't read any of the books since ADWD first came out back in 2011, so I've forgotten a few things.

But that would only make them second cousins once removed, and Gendry and Jon are third cousins.

One thing I did notice, though it is doesn't look like Gendry's hair grows much between King's Landing and Eastwatch. My first thought when a saw him with such short hair was that there might have been an outbreak of head lice in Flea Bottom.

Talking about hairstyles - was it last week that we saw Cersei's servant with hair as short as Cersei's. Maybe some women in King's Landing are copying the Queen's hairstyle.

And rewatching the episode again I thought how I had looked forward to seeing the reunion between Bronn and Tyrion and we never got to see it.

I would love to see the Dothraki turn out to be excellent blacksmiths. They must get their weapons somehow.

I actually wondered about that as they headed out into the cold in the final shot. That would be a lovely surprise for all...especially Jon. I wonder if Tormund knows about Benjen and his condition.
