The New USS Discovery....

I liked Nemesis' mixed use of CG and Physical

Remember the shot of the Ent-E ramming the Scimitar? Some of that was physical. Filmed upside down and in slow motion to capture the debris 'floating' away.

Mind you that was a film budget.

Nemesis had some ropey moments effects wise but the ram was great.

Discovery looking good to me. Clearly start trek (and star fleet) but different enough to be iconic and instantly recognisable as a different ship to an Enterprise for example.

...What I'm hoping is an in-universe rationale for why she looks different. Not just from Kirk's ship, but from Picard's or Garrett's or to a degree Harriman's, that is.

It was fun to get the Defiant complete with an immediate explanation for why she looked so cool and different. Perhaps Lorca will tell us something about those long nacelles right off the bat?

"Welcome to the Discovery! Did I tell you about the nacelles?"

"Yes captain, six times already."

I'm sure we'll find out why the ships special (even if it is just that new way to fly deal), but I don't think it's worth much of an explanation. Voyager looked different and all that was said about it was new shiny circuitry.

It's a new version of Star Trek. They're changing the way everything looks.

It was 'Bio-Neural' (living) circuitry (that was allergic to cheese.) :wtf:

And now you know why I'm worried a member of the ST: D writing staff is a big fan of, and wrote novels about ST:VOY.:brickwall: ;)

As is par for the course for a Trek spinoff, yes. It's just that this time the hero ship gets a couple of non-Enterprise features, such as the holes in the saucer, and it would be fun to learn whether this relates to her not being an Enterprise. That is, the Defiant was a non-Enterprise by virtue of being a dedicated Borg-fighter cum armed recce cloakship. Is the shape of the Discovery similarly for her refreshingly different mission profile, perhaps? Why does Starfleet build ships to different shapes?

Oh you guys you crack me up.

You know what I meant. What the visual effects would look like how we saw the Enterprise D separate how would the Discovery look in that sequence.

I'm hoping that the middle saucer is fixed and the outer ring and inner ball are both capable of separation and independent flight. Either that or the middle saucer separates. Either of those options would help justify the gaps as a 'safety margin' against collision, although the parts that come off still have to re-connect to the ship somewhere.

The problem is that I don't see any obvious separation lines yet.

I like that idea. The centre bit of the saucer coming off... I like the gaps but as I said if you lived in that part of the ship your view would be other windows.

Different artists working on different productions.
This of course is the true answer but

Why does Starfleet build ships to different shapes?
We would assume as new members join the Federation, new species enter Starfleet to become ship designers, and as new technologies develop - these things would lead to new styles of craft design emerging.

I find it odd thats rarely considered - with the amount of different races and styles within the Federation, each one would have an influence. Not sure why everything has to be so human-centric :/
