I don't think I noticed what happened to Randyll and Dickson Tarly. Did they survive the battle?

I wondered that - unknown at this stage.

Completely missed the gold comment by Tarly. Cersei can still buy armies.

It was only Drogon. The other two always follow Drogon and go along with whatever he's doing, which made me wonder as to why they weren't present (if you want to secure victory).

I'll have a look at the new trailer in a minute, but it would be very Game Of Thrones-y for Tyrion to second guess her. I'm picturing Jamie being rescued and captured (again). Tyrion and Jamie did care about one another. I know what Jamie said about splitting him in half but he was pretty raw at the time. Tricky.

Tyrion did emphasise that retaking the Iron Throne needn't be a blood bath. He stood on the mound looking pretty disturbed at the excruciating deaths of hundreds of men, plus his exchange with Daenerys on the beach seeming a bit foreboding - she even deferred to Jon.

It's setting up to be an interesting confluence of events. Is she really The Queen the Seven Kingdoms needs? That was a pretty brutal battle for the poor bastards in the Lannister army who never had a choice.

Tyrion did emphasise that retaking the Iron Throne needn't be a blood bath.

A civilian blood-bath.
He did realize that a military victory was necessary, in fact all those Lannister troops that died here would be already dead if his original plan panned out, because they were supposed to be at Casterly Rock.

It may have been the shortest episode but it packed quite a punch!

I was actually not surprised. I had done some research and you should look up the Roman scorpion bolt. Very much like what we saw in this episode, although this one was larger. The Romans even had a semi-automatic version. Once I saw the Romans had it, I figured it would show up in Game of Thrones. After all, if they had the crossbow part, it would take much to mount it like that. It suddenly becomes a MUCH more effective weapon against moving targets. Showing the bulky version was just to throw us off track!

Randall rode off before the attack so I'm sure he wasn't involved. He probably saw it from afar and rode swiftly to King's Landing to warn Cersei.

We didn't see Dickon's fate so I'm guessing he survived.

So Jon and Davos totally drew those cave paintings themselves, right?

I have to admit the thought had crossed my mind.

The dagger was a good in for him to both asses Bran, and to ingratiate himself to him.

I think he realized this might have been a huge mistake once Bran said "chaos is a ladder", and especially when he saw Arya fight with it.

Okay, that does make sense. Littlefinger being Littlefinger.

I was thoroughly pleased how spooked he looked.

"Chaos is a ladder" ... argh, I misheard it. Remember the quote now. I thought "Death is a ladder" didn't sound right.

I loved the melancholy scene where Tyrion was looking sadly at the death of the soldiers of House Lannister. He still has feelings for his brethren.

Tyrion was hoping that Jaime run away instead of charging at Daenerys. He feared for his brother.

BTW, Daenerys look cute as hell trying to pull the spear lance thing from her Dragon.

I think Jaime and Bronn escaped but i would have loved to have seen Tyrion meeting up with his brother and friend.

I think Randyll and Dickon Tarly got captured.

I also liked the scene where Jon meets Theon. It reminds me of season 1.

It is nice to see characters who had different story arcs meeting as either friend, foe or as both.

Daenerys and Jaime seeing other on the battlefield sent me chills.

This episode just blew me away. SO MUCH.

Tyrion's mixed emotions at seeing House Lannister burnt to a crisp.. wow.

What is up with Sansa? Why is she.. perturbed.. by Arya and whatsherface's impressed with each other joust?

The very first closeup shot of a dragon that we saw in The Spoils of War showed said dragon without a rider. It's a full-body, wide-angle "sideshot" as said dragon swoops in and takes out the first part of the Lannister army's shield wall and then roars. If this was intended to be Drogon, the animators made an editing mistake because, as noted, said dragon has no-one riding it.

Brienne, you mean? More sparring than a joust - Sansa is likely worried about the single-minded killing machine that Arya has become.

ETA: A joust is specifically a hastilude between mounted warriors.

Sansa is just freaked out what Arya has turned into. The first time she mentioned her kill list Sansa thought she was joking, but then when Bran brought it up she realized there was seriously a list of people for Arya to murder.

This is a lot to take in considering who Arya was last time they saw each other. She is understandably shocked her little sister is a terrifying hardened killer.

It would be difficult for Jamie to escape where he is. In the water right next to a dragon when Denerys knows he's there. I'm wondering exactly how badly that spear injured the dragon. Tyrion seemed like he wanted Jamie to escape.

I loved watching Arya's water dancing around Brienne, although I was a bit surprised she credited her skills to No One instead of Syrio. She truly has changed.

That was one of my favorite parts of the episode. Arya surprised Brienne with her skill and showed the viewer just how awesome she is once again. Brienne beat the Hound and Arya, at minimum, fought Brienne to a draw.

Even though I think it's unlikely, I would now be interested in seeing Arya take on The Mountain. Imagine the mismatch and laughter until Arya strikes a blow.

The show has set up The Hound v. The Mountain the entire time, but it would be much better to see Arya have that battle. I keep thinking they are setting up Arya to die. I can't see Arya succeeding in killing Cersei, especially this season. Cersei is so cunning, that I feel like this would be a mirror of Oberyn Martel, where Arya will look like she's about to win, and then be killed.

That's a theory, not a spoiler. I'd hate to see Arya die. She's such a great character.

Syrio wasn't the only person who taught Arya--he was just her first teacher. Syrio was from Braavos, and that's where Arya learned so much. It's not surprising she credited No One. Plus, she hasn't forgotten Syrio, and his death increased her list.

It's Drogon, it's only Drogon there at the battle, and Daenarys was riding him the whole time until the end when she got down to pull out the spear.

She's difficult to see because she's like 5'2" on a giant plane-sized dragon wearing an all black dress that matches the dragon's scales, lying prone in the middle of back fins that are as high as she is, and riding back at the "wing root"/shoulders so he can have full mobility of his head and neck to reel back and breathe fire.

Tell that to that Dothraki who got pinned like a butterfly! And that first bolt that missed Drogon may have skewered some poor goatherd a few miles downrange.

The Romans had such a weapon, which, as mentioned above, was called a Scorpion.
