I remember getting a StarLog Magazine in 79 and as I was 9 years old my biggest questions were:
1) Why does Kirk have hair like Frankie Valli now?
2) Why are they wearing pajamas?
3) What's that communicator/phaser/belt buckle?
That was it...was cool with the ships and Klingons---lol

It's the rush to judgment that bugs me sometimes. Folks will argue that it's okay to judge an upcoming movie or TV show on nothing more than rumors or publicity photos or whatever if that's all we have to go on, but why do we even need to have an opinion so early on? Why not just sit back and wait for the finished product before pronouncing it "doomed" or a "betrayal" or a "train wreck" or whatever?

(One can also raise an eyebrow at all the hyperbolic language one often sees on the internet, but that's a whole other issue. :) )

I swear to God, I once saw a leaked toy commercial cited as "proof" that a certain superhero movie was going to suck . . . .
It blows my mind, really. I just can't fathom some of it.

FWIW, Into Darkness is one of my favorite Trek films. I think it's brilliant. No one asked me! lol

Nobody asked me, but I thought it was terrible, down there with Nemesis, not sure which is 12th and which is 13th. Beyond and '09 are brilliant though, both in the top 3, I think Beyond may well be #1. Which just goes to show you can't even categorise fans into 'likes new trek' and 'hates new trek'

Discovery remains to be seen, there's no where near enough information to judge how much it will appeal or not. I'm looking forward to a Trek with modern production standards, something less episodic.

And goes to show how much variety there is in fan opinion, since I prefer all of the Kelvin films to any of the TNG ones

I'd do the Kelvinverse Enterprise-B. Shatner gets a recurring role as Admiral Kirk, immediate superior to Enterprise' new commander.

So it's Enterprise-B, not Discovery. OTHER than that, I wouldn't change a thing.

Pretty sure the rule is: If you're not angry, you're not a true fan.

I came up with my own criteria to decide if you're a "true fan" of a specific franchise. By no means is this scientific just something I thought up.

You have to meet these 3 things:

1.) You have to like, respect, and be able to consume (read, watch, play, etc.) the original incarnation of the franchise. It doesn't have to be your favorite but you must respect it. [i came up with this after becoming a Trekkie at the conclusion of my viewing of TOS and was astonished by the disrespect and in some regards outright dislike and hate by supposed fellow Trekkies. I came to the conclusion that there are a lot of immature fans and people out there who can only watch stuff that came out 20 years ago. Also I added this point after hearing comic book fans say how much of a fan they are of a certain character but couldn't read said character's first appearances. I don't know how you can be a true fan of a franchise without liking and respecting the original incarnation of it.]

2.) You have to have consumed over 50% of the franchise's canon. [this came about after hearing people claim to be true fans of Star Wars and/or Trek and yet haven't even seen over half the franchise canon. This is another thing I don't know how you can claim to be a true fan of something without consuming over half of it's canon to be able to talk intelligently about it.]

3.) You have to actually like and enjoy over 50% of a franchise's canon. [this was because I heard fans saying they only liked the original trilogy of Star Wars or only like one or two of the Trek shows. To me that's not a true fan. You don't have to like every single aspect of a franchise but you should like a simple majority to be considered a true fan in my opinion.]

Also no one polled me but I would of said Into Darkness was the worst Trek movie by far as well. Followed closely by Trek 09 lol.

What you're doing here is called gatekeeping and it's really dumb and arbitrary. These "standards" are completely meaningless to anyone but yourself. All this does is discourage newcomers and make Trekkies look like jerks.

Here's an actual rule of thumb to be a Trekkie: Do you like Star Trek? If the answer is yes, you're a Trekkie. If someone has seen a single episode or movie and they say they're a Trekkie, hey, welcome to the club. Glad to have that person. If someone has only seen STID and calls themselves a Star Trek fan, they are just as legitimately a Trekkie as someone who's seen every episode of every series six times.

TLDR: Don't be a gatekeeper. It's not a good look.

Exactly. You shouldn't have to pass an exam to enjoy STAR TREK--or try to pull rank on other fans.

Ditto for comic books, superheroes, Godzilla, or just science fiction, fantasy, and horror in general. "You're not a real SPACE VIXENS fan unless you've read the original pulp novels," etc.

Nothing personal, let's leave the cliques back in high school.

To be fair, if somebody declares that "Spock's Brain" or "The Way to Eden" are their favorite eps, I'm going to quietly raise an eyebrow (and possibly question their sanity), but I'm not going to demand that they turn in their fan card or accuse them of not being a "real" Trekkie. Because that just reeks of fannish snobbery, and sends a message that Trekkies are cliquish and unwelcoming to newcomers.

"Gatekeeping" is part of a larger syndrome. As genre fiction becomes more mainstream, you invariably see some fans getting all territorial and trying to mark their territory. "I was a fan of that obscure indie band before they got popular," etc.

But you know what? We need to get over that. The attitude that Trek is only for the "real" Trekkies, and that only our opinions matter, is not doing anyone any favors. .

Yeah I mean I and another Trek fan can disagree on absolutely everything about Trek. But we are both still Trekkies because nobody has the right to tell someone else they're not a true fan. It's snobby bullshit.
