I started a poll in the Discovery section of the forum, check it out. It would seem about 75% of fans are in some form positive about Discovery. ;) Fan reaction isn't what you think it is. Just because some keyboard heroes are typing more and LOUDER than others, doesn't make them a majority.

This forum is not representative of the fanbase as a whole. The Discovery section even less so.

The fans do not speak with a single voice, as this message board proves every day. We're a famously opinionated and argumentative bunch--and always have been. So there will never be any consensus where the "the fan reaction" is concerned because STAR TREK means different things to different people and different generations.

Mimi Panitch, who was the Star Trek book editor decades ago, once compared the job to being the Pope during a time of extreme doctrinal dispute. Nothing much has changed since then, except that there's a lot more "canon" and contradictions to wrangle over. :)

You could not find consensus anywhere on Star Trek. So, we work with what we got.

Otherwise, that ridiculous poll that rated Star Trek Into Darkness as the "worst" film would not have made the news.

Never heard about that poll. Star Trek V was obviously the worst. I'll accept arguments for TMP or SFS or Insurrection but Into Darkness? Not everyone's cup of tea but definitely not the worst.

Yes. If all a reporter looks at before writing up their hot take is Facebook comments, they'll think The Fans (TM) are ready to revolt with pitchforks and torches. If you look at TrekBBS and Twitter, the reaction seems much more positive.

And then other reporters cite those articles and the whole thing gets blown out of proportion.

Do I need to tell my New York Post story again? :)

A good story always merits a retelling.

You asked for it . . . :)

Back around the time INTO DARKNESS came out, I was approached by an reporter from the New York Post who was working on an article about how all us old-school Trekkies supposedly hated the reboot movies. I spent at least a half-hour on the phone to the guy explaining to him that this was hardly the case; that at most a vocal minority were adamantly opposed to the new movies, while many of us long-time fans were quite enjoying the new films. I also talked at length about all the reasons I liked the new movies.

He didn't want to hear it. He pretty much admitted that the slant of the article ("Trekkies Hate New Movies!") had been determined in advance and he just wanted a quote from a veteran Star Trek author confirming this. When I declined to play ball, he asked me to suggest another Trek author who did dislike the reboot. Again, I declined to cooperate.

Sure enough, when the article ran a few days later, the gist of it was (surprise!) "Trekkies Hate New Movies," and the one quote from me was the part where I grudgingly conceded that some fans were upset over the reboot. I guess "Trekkies have wide range of opinions regarding new movies!" was not sexy enough.

So, yeah, take any hype of a fan backlash with huge grain of salt.

Catspaw is one of my favorites. It's not even cheesy. The actors who portray Sylvia and Korob perform superbly.

As a kid, I always looked forward to that rerun turning up again in the rotation. Halloween, Gothic horror, and STAR TREK . . . all in one episode. And written by Robert Bloch no less.

Indeed. Sometimes instant feedback isn't the best thing.

It's the rush to judgment that bugs me sometimes. Folks will argue that it's okay to judge an upcoming movie or TV show on nothing more than rumors or publicity photos or whatever if that's all we have to go on, but why do we even need to have an opinion so early on? Why not just sit back and wait for the finished product before pronouncing it "doomed" or a "betrayal" or a "train wreck" or whatever?

(One can also raise an eyebrow at all the hyperbolic language one often sees on the internet, but that's a whole other issue. :) )

I swear to God, I once saw a leaked toy commercial cited as "proof" that a certain superhero movie was going to suck . . . .
