Isn't everything before the arrival of Nero the same in both timelines?

That's funny. I was at the gas station the other day and paid by card. I thought I heard the machine beep and pulled the card out. I had to start over.

I accidently said to the girl "I'm sorry, I pulled it out too soon." and immediately regretted my choice of words. She snickered.

Theoretically, yes. However, there is an argument that maybe the split came sooner, with PrimeKirk having been born in Iowa and NuKirk being born on the Kelvin. Some believe that something happened before Kirk's birth to change where he was actually born.

"I'm from Iowa" =/= "I was born in Iowa"
But besides, the ST'09 script and novel implies Nero's attack sent Winona into labour prematurely.

    BUT, that said...

Very true! Which is why I'm in the camp that the Narada incident is where the split occurs. Doesn't stop people from thinking otherwise though (which is why I mentioned the alternate theory, no matter how dubious it may be)... :)

That's what Kutzman and Orci claimed after ST'09 released and I argued for years. But when Pegg and Jung took over writing for Beyond, Pegg claimed the timelines were separate from the big bang onward, while justifying Kelvin-Sulu being gay when Sulu-Prime wasn't.

The new Star Trek Encyclopedia has the following to say:
I'm convinced the "...caused other differences in the timeline, both in the future and before the triggering event" is future-proofing ongoing Kelvin universe movies and Star Trek: Discovery, which are made by separate production companies and written by different writing teams and thus are bound to come up with contradictory 23rd century Trek backstory which can't be excused by a 2233.04 divergence date.

This way, the DSC people don't have to worry about squeezing the USS Franklin NX-325 into the world of Enterprise NX-01 and the Kelvin people don't need to worry about Klingon Sarcophagus ships, Mike Burnham's backstory with Sarek, or how the Captain Lorca's USS Discovery fits into and around their version of Star Trek.

With history being changed so drastically(Vulcan destroyed, etc), and since time travel is possible in the Trek universe, all future temporal incursions will have changed. The past could be dramatically effected.

And Kelvin people might not be as concerned with temporal prime directives/preserving the timelines and whatnot. They're a wild bunch, yaknow.

Despite claims that this new parallel timeline/universe sprung from the incursion of Nero and the Nerada I am also convinced the Kelvin timeline preexisted Nero's action and that the new movies and Enterprise and Discovery all take place in the new Kelvin timeline.

But shouldn't the Prime Enterprise-E be in Montana in 2063 in both timelines now? Its too messy to say that Nero's Intrusion changed the common past, I really don't like that Pegg stated that.

    ^ So ignore it. That's what I did. :)

Look, I hate to keep repeating this, but what Pegg said doesn't mean anything. If his theory doesn't make it into ST4, assuming there ever is one (which isn't looking good at this stage :( ), then effectively it's worthless.

Going forward from that: 2063 predates the divergence, so characters from either timeline could theoretically have met there. Same goes for Data's head under San Francisco.

As for Sulu: How do we know for sure that his prime version wasn't gay? Think about it.

That's the problem with time travel. Did some time traveling like that in First Contact or the Trials and Tribbulations mean they were meant to happen that way, a causality loop, or where they singular events causing a change to the time line?

^ Trials and Tribble-ations wasn't a closed loop, because we saw a version of those events where the DS9 crew wasn't there. FC, on the other hand, probably was. You can't prove it wasn't, anyway.

True, but some claim that FC did change some thinks in the past such as the seemingly more advanced technology in ENT compared to TOS which could mean TOS has been altered but we just haven't seen how it was altered yet.

He wasn't born on the Kelvin, he was born on the shuttle.
    Which was called Iowa. ;)

The Kelvin's shuttles were numbered, only the Enterprise had named ones, and even then only in the comic and game tie-ins.

The original script for ST 2009 had the now-Kelvin named "Iowa."
