From "Journey to Babel", it sounded like Sarek objected to Spock joining the military...
But...but...Starfleet isn't a military...or is it???

It isn't. Orci confirmed on Trekmovie once that that had been the original plan. Unfortunately I can't remember what article he was commenting on, but he did confirm it was true. They'd also considered having the Enterprise get destroyed taking out the Narada at the end of the movie, but Paramount said no to both ideas, and they came to realize it didn't serve a purpose.Pity that it's only an urban legend that the ship destroyed in ST09 was to be the TOS Enterprise. I admit I would like to have seen that.
Explorers can be quite forceful and militant....Christopher Columbus, James Cook, etcBut...but...Starfleet isn't a military...or is it???

Out of universe, yes. No explanation in universe that I'm aware of.I thought the Kelvin was named for Abrams uncle?
But he's known to history as Lord Kelvin. Why is this an issue?Kelvin wasn't his name. And I think it's "Thomson"
The university he worked at was near the river Kelvin. He was first knighted and became Sir William Thomson, and years later, was made a Lord. So, Sir William Thomson, Lord(of the) Kelvin. But he's known to history as Lord Kelvin. Why is this an issue?
Technical corrections aside, I've always heard him called Lord Kelvin, so not sure what the issue was with the naming convention. The university he worked at was near the river Kelvin. He was first knighted and became Sir William Thomson, and years later, was made a Lord. So, Sir William Thomson, Lord(of the) Kelvin.
Yes, I can read Wikipedia, too.The university he worked at was near the river Kelvin. He was first knighted and became Sir William Thomson, and years later, was made a Lord. So, Sir William Thomson, Lord(of the) Kelvin.
I thought you said "Why is he known as lord Kelvin?" or something to that effect.Yes, I can read Wikipedia, too.

It's not an issue. In fact all I originally said was that I like the name Iowa better, after someone mentioned that it was the original name of the ship that became the "Kelvin."

He probably objected to that as well. All Vulcans do not share the same views.Ironic, given the existence of the USS Intrepid.
Note : I edited this post to rearrange my thoughts. From "Journey to Babel", it sounded like Sarek objected to Spock joining the military...
Ironic, given the existence of the USS Intrepid.
Not if James T. Kirk was a new born baby because Captain Pike told James Kirk the his farther had save him and most of the Kelvin crew and James Kirk became Captain of the USS Enterprise in the 2009 reboot which prime line 2 and TOS is prime line 1 or that could make it a prime line 3 with a mix of 1 and 2 but who knows for sureCorrect me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Kelvin timeline start AFTER this series takes place?
