How many seasons will it last?

I'd say 3 to 4 seasons, tops.
There isn't as much of an appetite for complex dramatic shows that run 5 or more seasons, particularly on streaming networks. The majority of the shows that last that long are sitcoms or procedurals.

I imagine each episode will be standalone-ish. That's the nature of a series set on a ship that can visit a new planet every week. A seasonal arc that ties every episode together and resolves in the season finale is kind of a given though, and I expect each episode to be closely linked to the ones before and after.

I don't know whether Discovery will be a success or a failure, but why do people often assume CBS is spending all that money in hopes it will fail? It is illogical }:| In that case they could have saved a lot of money by not producing the show. I think they see the danger of Netflix monopolizing TV series distribution and are trying to stop it by developing their own streaming platform. I think we can make an educated guess that Discovery will last at least two seasons. Everything else is just speculation and hope.
the issue with continual seasons will be tied to the absolutely absurd decision to put it on CBS all-access. If it doesn't do well, CBS will cancel it and blame lack of support and then shelve any TV series indefinitely.

They picked a strange partner if that's their agenda... ;)

Netflix is the worldwide distributor of Star Trek: Discovery.
I know they are working with Netflix. But All Access is still in its infancy (in the USA, let alone the rest of the world) so partnering with Netflix is a natural choice..for now. I think their long term strategy is to expand their library and pull all CBS content from other streaming sites. In order to do that they have to set a trend. And they are using a well known franchise to do it. That's why they appear to be very supportive of Trek-it's not just Star Trek it's the future of CBS distribution. So I would not underestimate their commitment.
