Music That Speaks To You

I'm kind of a lazy, filthy casual music listener. Music isn't the most important thing in my life and it doesn't really define me. But there is one musical piece that immediately comes to mind when I'm asked about music that speaks to me or is uniquely important to me: Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante. No lyrics, no ideas per se. It's just the way it makes me feel. It's the most profound piece of music I've ever heard. If I were to die tomorrow, it's the last musical piece I'd want to hear.

Thanks, @Mr. Laser Beam .

I've been listening to The Proclaimers a lot lately. Sunshine on Leith has been one of my primary Happy Albums since I was a kid. Every song on that album is truly great but one -- the random impotence song, which is still surprisingly catchy. This is one of my favorite songs by them. As a life-long nonbeliever I don't know why I have such an affinity for a lot of religious music, but as I believe I said before in this thread, I think it's because the songs touch on universal human feelings, just through the lens of a religion I don't happen to believe in. The first line of this song, You make it sound easy, you say you just hold your hand out, don't you? it just hits me:

Have you seen their musical? Sunshine on Leith it's called and it's really good. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Dare I ask what song you're talking about?
PS. I became a fan of The Proclaimers as a young kid, and talking about this made me remember the moment I realized what that song was about. I was about thirteen, my mom and I were in the car singing our hearts out to that album, and suddenly it clicked and I asked, "Mom, are were singing about not being able to get an erection?" and she said, "Yes, I think we are," and then we kept singing.

Lately, I've been trying to understand what is it about music that fascinates us?

Some sources say that music releases some "positive feeling things" in our brain... but I really would like to understand why music sounds good (or bad) to us.

I can relate to this song because it helps me realize that, even though I may not exactly have the most glamorous or exciting job in the world, I can still be proud of the work I do.

This applies to everyone reading this, as well as me. Don't ever let anyone tell you that your job isn't worth as much just because it doesn't involve sitting at a desk pushing papers, or any of that crap. Whatever you do for a living - it's your job, and you have the right to take pride in it.

I tend to stay away from the country music of yesteryear. If only because I found it did not communicate values, but rather preached them. But, now that Tippin has been brought up, there is a song that is the exception, rather than the rule, of my statement.

Having just spent a glorious week in Canada for the Calgary Stampede, I can unquestioningly attest that these songs speak to me.

A thread from a place that shall not be named reminded me of this golden oldie from my (relative) youth.

Sensational indeed.

In early June I went on vacation to Cancun, so lately I've been listening to Latin music. The original version is better without the JB remix.

In keeping of my promise to @thestrangequark, I'm damn well gonna keep bumping this thread for as long as I have to.

This thread is NOT going to die, and if it has to get bumped again and again just to keep it going - and if I'm the one who has to keep bumping it - then that's what it shall be.

I know I'm not the only one who is being affected by this thread, and the longer it lasts, the more likely it is that somebody else might be prompted to share a song that speaks to THEM. And that can only be a good thing.

That said, I listened to this song on the way home today and it definitely spoke to me:

The guys in the band have said that this song is a prayer. Maybe that's why I like it so much.

Mr. Mister said:
Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison, kyrie

The wind blows hard against this mountain side, across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide, setting my feet upon the road

My heart is old, it holds my memories, my body burns a gemlike flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine, is where I find myself again

Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison, where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison, on a highway in the light

When I was young I thought of growing old, of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road, or only wished what I could be

Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison, where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison, on a highway in the light
